Do you do your own Kinky Twists?

I am going to attempt to do my own kinky twists...lol, that's kinda funny just writing it but yea, I'm going to try.

Does anyone here do there own and can give me some tips? I have looked at vids on youtube and it looks kinda easy and if I can't get the twisting from the root effect, I will just do little braids at top and then go to the twists. I actually did it because I was on hairsisters and looking at there sale and they had this afro hair on sale for $5 so I bought two packs, its 22in long so I'm going to cut it in half because I want really short twists. Here is a picture:

I looks kinda not cute on model but they said its good for kinky twists and I didn't want to spend a lot on hair if in fact I wasn't able to do the twists and this way I don't feel like I lost money.

I don't know why I want to do these, I can barely twist my hair as is..lol but I want to try them for a while in the summer while I swim and maybe get it to grow. What do you guys think?

I did my own kinky twists!

They were my look for a good minute

However, it took 4 packs of hair for me to do my head so I'm worried that you might have enough hair. I also cut the length in half... The twists were past shoulder length, but not quite arm pit. Kinda like the models.

I also curled the ends to make it look neater (really key if you are a beginner). Don't be like me and try to curl the entire hair (hahahaha). The ends will do. Get some perm rods, hot water in a cup, two towels (one for your shoulders, the other to dry the hair after it gets curled) and you are good to go.

It's one of those styles where it looks better when it gets older since your natural hair blends in with the kinky hair a lot easier than braids.

I also braided the hair then did the twisting. I never twisted at the root. Hmmmm... I think that with that kind of kinky hair, it might be harder to do on yourself. You can try though... I'm definitely not an expert braider
good to hear. Now you are making me think I won't have enough, I think I'm going to do the back more big than the front since its my first time and if I need hair, I can run to beauty supply store but hopefully it will enough. I want mine about chin length at longest.

You should check out your local BSS. You can get braiding hair for twists for $3 a pack or less. The cheap stuff is like $0.99. For $5, I hope it's super duper high quality.

I'd love to see how your hair comes out when you do yours. If the hair behaves the way I'd like, I may go with it. Be sure to post pics!

Well since I'm just experimenting with seeing if I can do this first and if I can't, no biggie.

Shawnette, for the kinky twist, you need the afro curl type braiding hair and its about $8 a pack. I tried to these type of twist with a pack I had laying around, just to see, but the hair is too fine and silky and doesn't catch so I am going to see it I can do it with this hair or not...

Labelfree gave me another idea for something quick, crochetting hair, which I already know how to do but its not my favorite style so I didn't think of it. But I have never did the crochet for hair, only the braid thingies. I watched a vid on youtube to see how it looks after and I liked it well enough that I might try this first while my hair is being delivered to me.

The hair I bought is afro kinky hair. The difference between this hair and regular braiding hair is that this one has a kinky type pattern, with a wave or curl... you would notice it, its really thick and it does better for the kinky twists.

I think it's interesting the regional differences between hair terms. Here in St. Louis, instead of calling them kinky twists we call them two-strand twists. And instead of using "afro kinky hair" we use "Bob Marley" hair for the twists. It actually says "Bob Marley" on the bag. Here, the decent quality hair is about 10 bucks a bag. I've never done them on my own, but after spending way too much money the last time to get them done (even though they came out great), I think I could do them myself now (and in less time).

The pic I attached is of my last set of two strands. I was transitioning with them last year. They were a light brown color. Here they do a pretty good job, but the price is inflated way too much. I haven't been able to find anyone here to do them for cheaper than 200 (gasp! i know expensive!).

Good luck on doing them yourself. Keep us posted!
