Will my Curls Ever Drop?

I have a question for all of you ladies that have been natural for many years...if you are a 3c/4a shrinkage queen (like me), at what point did your hair stop growing out and start growing down? or did it ever?

I just passed my 3 year nappyversary and my hair is passed BSL when pulled out but a little past my neck in its normal state. I know my hair is growing but it seems that I'm collecting more and more volume and no "hang".

My shrinkage is out of hand and I'm realizing I can probably beat anyone on the boards in a shrinkage contest (any challengers?...lol). Does any long haired 3c/4as have a similar situation? At this rate, I really wonder what my hair is going to look like in another 3 years ( at my shoulders but down to my butt when stretched...lol)

PS: My fotki photos are a year old! Yup, I need to handle that

i think thats just the way the cookie crumbles for alot of us. when my hair was a few inches short of bsl stretched, it still shrunk up to shoulder length/above shoulder length. my hair now is past my shoulders when stretched but shrinks up to ear length. like you, i gain volume instead of hang time.

i remember when i first saw spirals fotki, she had hair that did a similar thing as well. past bsl, but shrinks up to shoulder length. i think using henna has allowed her more hang time though.
i too have hair past BSL, and i have more volume than hang. i think mixed textures are more prone to volume over hang. i know my 4a patch goes around the middle of my head. it's at most 2 inches along my scalp. but it is the main reason that my hair doesn't hang. my hair literally grows out rather than down in that area.

Thanks subbrock. I definitely need to get back into the "treatments" for some hang...henna dries me out but amla definitely helped with this when I did it. (Your daugter is adorable btw!!).

Curlymami, wow! Your hair is gorgeous, I definitely need to get back into the protective styles...do you see a big difference in retaining length when you keep your hair in braids/twists versus when you wear it out?

oh thanks, mochalatta! i do indeed notice a difference in my ends doing protective styles. they are less brittle and i don't have nearly as many split ends and knots as i used to. oil rinsing helped a lot with the knots in the past, too.

i think the "treatments" will help you. i know henna helped with my 4a hair making it less frizzy so i had a little more hang than usual. i haven't done a henna treatment since september and my hair definitely responds differently.

i'll take volume over hang. when my hair starts to grow down i know it's time for a cut.

I too wish my hair would hang... my hair hangs when wet... and looks a hot mess if I let it dry that way... it shrinks up like crazy... I'm trying to wait it out another year.. and then get my hair cut finally... i'm afraid though, but I know for some people cutting helps..

bottom of my hair is dropping. Top layers are still flying. Mostly due to growth, moisture and a good cut.

Old pics or not, your hair is gorgeous.

mochalatta408 i love your hair. my hair is somewhat droopy (is that a word?) and although when i straighten it it's below bsl, it shrinks to my shoulders. i think my layers having grown out contirbute a lot to the droopiness.
I'm going to Mexico until this bills business blows over.

Mocha I have the same issue. I'm bottom of arm pit length but it shrinks to my ears . The only way I get hang is by blowing some air to the roots. And even then it only stretches to right above the bottom of my neck.

I haven't been natural for many years, but I thought I would chime in.

Mine is still pretty much out than down. I'm finding that I actually like it especially in the summer. I have always hated having a bunch of hair around my ears and neck when it's hot and humid (which it is 70 percent of the time where I live).

If I do want hang, twist outs usually help with that. Anyway, my hair is so cottony I wonder that it will ever really "hang"

I feel you.... I get a lot of shrinkage too, so much so that it seems like my hair just gets fuller instead of actually growing. I'm an out and up grower as opposed to down. If its been this long, it just may not be the way your hair grows. Like Kitathena, twists help for me also in getting a little more stretch without heat.

Your hair is really cute! We have similar hair.

I've been fully natural for about 5-6 years, and I still have an issue with not enough hang. It's not so bad with tons of product, but I don't really like having so much stuff in my hair. My hair's a little past shoulder length when stretched, and shrinks up to about ear length. I figured that as it gets longer, the weight will make it start growing downward, so it's a waiting game...

I may not have hang time just yet, but my hair is growing down and out, and my TWA is 3" stretched.
I have 4a hair, i think 3c in the front, and the front is growing out right now
