Unhappy Are My Roots Anti-Curl?!

Hi all! I posted this in 4a too, but I suspect I'm a little 4b as well, so maybe one of you has the golden answer for my woes Okay, so I've tried to find threads that deal with this, but I'm (desperately) hoping someone can shed some more light on this for me:

I have the most insanely undefined roots in the history of the galaxy. No really, I checked the whole galaxy.

I'm 4a (I believe) and can get great definition at the ends of my hair, but the roots just won't curl, even though they obviously want to. I've tried to apply more product to the roots. I've tried raking, which works for the rest of my hair, but not the roots. I've tried gels, ACV rinse, finger-coiling, etc. I even stopped using a comb to detangle for a while and just using my fingers to preserve definition. Seems like I've done all I can think to do

A little more background: I don't have any straight hair at the ends; I've been fully natural for years now. I do have much heat damage, but if it were that, wouldn't it also affect the ends too? Also, I'm not using cones and I generally co-wash, and do a non-SLS shampoo weekly (I still haven't figured out how to make my Shea mix feel less thick, so I get paranoid about it coating my hair). I don't use heat anymore (as of 1.5 months ago), and I DT 1-2 times a week. I henna (well, cassia) and use oils and Shea. Oh, and I don't use terrycloth, only microfiber. And I wrap my hair at night. Sorry for rambling; I just want to give as much detail as possible

Does anyone else have this problem? Should I just be using a ton of conditioner? Maybe I have a hair twin reading this who can help me

I posted pictures below. TIA!!!!!
By the way, in these pictures my hair is soaking wet (I know, it sure doesn't look like it)!!

Default That is the nature of your hair

This just seems to be the way your hair naturally is. It's nice.

I agree with Haj, I think thats the way it naturally is. My hair is the same way and I've tried everything. When its damp its still really defined and frizz free but the minute it dries it turns to frizz/fuzz and there is nothing i can do about it. Have you tried KCCC or Curly Magic to help define your hair. Henna might be a way to go to help define your hair also.

I tried KCCC and it works to a degree, but I would need to coat my roots in it for it to work.

I'm happy to report that since I originally posted this, I've noticed some better definition overall. My roots are still very non-curl inclined, but we're getting there...

I did use some henna, but I want to preserve my natural color as much as possible, so I'm looking at Henna/Amla mixes now.

I took a tip from Suburbanbushbabe and used a LOT of (my cowash) conditioner to saturaate the roots to promote clumping. Then I squeeze most of it out of my hair (it's cheap VO5, so I don't really mind). I'm still learning how much to squeexe out, because it takes a while longer to dry, but it's a trial-and-error thing,, I guess.

Thanks for the replies! I'm just trying to work with it now that I know it's a natural characteristic of my hair. I thought that maybe there was something I wasn't doing or wasn't doing right, but it looks like I've just been blessed with a head full of "character"

You are pretty much my hair twin (but such a prettier color!) and I do have heat damage on the front and crown of my hair. The back of my hair does just fine, so does the sides...but man on man the roots at the front and crown just refuse to lie down and give a girl some curl....it just waves...like "hi! how ya doin?" So I plop more product on it and...yep it's still wavin'! I half think that it must be the heat damage still left on that side, I hesitate to go scissor happy on it again, as I've already BC'd without meaning to last month. It's almost as if the damaged ends are dragging the curl down and leaving me with nothing but a wave.

Red face I found a solution

Hello my hair is the same way, but I think you can be considered 3c , one thing that helped me was applying Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie section by section (about 5 sections from the nape to the front) i also tried to applied an anti curl cream to my frizzy roots, i suppose my hair got upset and wasn't going to have it so it decided to do do it's job and curl up.
