BBDoll would be number 2. I'm guessing that this hair type is either very rare or when people that have it start feeling their new growth they get scared.

I don't think it's rare. I have a long list of Fotki's bookmarked that showcase this curl pattern. However, most are new naturals (including me) and have not yet been on their natural journey long enough to acheive BSL+ yet. It takes about 3 years from a person's last relaxer to gain the 12-15 inches required to hit APL-BSL (barring setbacks, breakage, and trims). My guess and hope is that in 2-3 years these women will remain natural and have huge puffs and "long" hair when stretched.

Domenique on Fotki closed her account but had MBL-WL stretched coils. CMW45 and Vibrantthing (both on Fotki) are at APL stretched and growing towards BSL. TruBlu on (BHM) is BSL. Oooop2 (Fotki) is BSL with 4A also. Celeigh (?) on LCHF is BSL too. They're definitley out there.
You're right naturellewonder. I suppose the more black women become natural the more we'll see of this hair type. Thanks again for posting about all of these inspiring ladies. Now I'm gonna have to go and start hawking some fotki accounts. lol

Hmm, you know I don't know if I really consider velvet a 4a. I look at her more as a 3b curl diameter wise with 4a/b texture.

Yeah I see what you're saying about her hair. Now If a true 4a is coffe-stir size then most folks who think they are 4a are not.

Hmmm, ok, then if that is the case, then I have gotten confused. I guess that's why I mostly lurk around here because I think my hair has all kinds of different curl sizes. What do you all think?

I thought 4A ranged from coffee stirrer to pen springs to pencil. This particular thread was for the pen spring ladies but 4A can range in size. I think Sandy Coils has some 4A just like BeautifulBrownBabyDoll does. Sandy Coils your hair is BEAUTIFUL.

I wouldn't say that the 4a hair type only encompasses coffee stirrer sized curls. But I think once you're curls get to the size of like a magic marker you're stepping into the 3's category.

This is what I thought too. 3C is supposed to be sharpie markers. 3B is supposed to be regular markers.

I have some pencil, some sharpie marker and some pen spring size curls/coils.

I co-wash with VO5 and I mix my eco styler with long aid activator. Seal with jojoba oil or coconut oil and shake well.

On another note. this hair typing thing can get a little confusing but like Haj said 4a is more than just coffee-stir sized. I think most of us have different hair types on our head.

So you do this with a wash and go? Or do you clump curls with a denman?

Thanks ladies. I think we all have some differnt sized curls/coils. Mine range from coffee stirrer to regular drinking straw size to ink pen/pencil size. But most is between the coffee stirrer & regular drinking straw size. For almost a year I have been trying to figure out my hair type from various websites & pics, but goodness, this is a true science! LOL

Hm, I thought that pencil and regular straw-sized curls were 3c?

I would also like to see more coffee-stirrers just because I have not seen that hairtype as much either.

Hi wild~hair.

Thanks for the compliment

Seeing all the great hair is also the reason I love this place so much. I've been hoping to see pics of hair like mine so that I can get some style ideas since my hair has grown out of the TWA stage.

Loving this thread.

I have this hair type as well, though in my crown there are some looser straw-sized areas. It may not be rare, but I live in DC where there are a TON of naturals, and I've just never seen it. In fact, I regularly have other naturals approach me in wonder saying "Your curls are SO small and cute!"

As soon as I figure out how to post a picture, I will.
