Hmmm....I think my daughter might have a spongy texture. I only seem to get good curl definition when I leave conditoner in her hair....

You have given me hope that one day I can have a decent slicked back bun. I think I'm going to wait for your pictorial. Thanks.

Spongy 4a here. Definitely an informative thread.
Natural.. Take Two!
Yeah this was a great thread. I had to edit my signature behind this one .

Most of my hair is definitely spongy. I think I was calling it cottony before.
My under layers are either silky or thready--maybe I'll call them thready because that sounds funny. I know the under layers have shine, but I just cannot get on board for very high shine. Then again I think they'd be considered high frizz by many, but frizz is all relative. *sigh*
layer cake of tight, spongy and silky/thready S strands that kink more than they coil
spiced with a few spiral coils and non-curling waves
mostly medium and fine with a sprinkle of coarse strands
protein is yummy
I can't tell if her hair is spongy. It's definitely 4a, very fine, VERRRY thick.

It seems like whatever I do, it looks dull and frizzy until I 1) take a photo in which the shine is revealed; 2) take her outside in the sun, during which the shine is revealed.

Even when her pigtails are not visibly frizzy, the sections will be puffy whenever it's humid or rainy. Sometimes I slather her hair in whatever moisturizer I'm using before braiding a section, and it will STILL look rough, frizzy and non-shiny.

And when you look at her hair in pigtails, you can see all these tiny hairs sticking up all along the length of the braid and the top of each section.

When I wet her hair during washing, it doesn't even look wet.

Believe it or not, it is soaking wet here and the next photo:

Is she spongy? I can't tell. I did her hair in 6 regular braids (no ponytail holders @ the base, just barrettes @ the ends).............and I'm not happy with how there's all this frizz from top to bottom, even though I dampened each section before braiding, used shea butter mix and a dab of gel after braiding. Then again, it's been very humid and rainy today.

And I HATE pulling her hair too tight just so there won't be puffiness.....it breaks if I'm not careful.
