Wondering if you 4a ladies have any good tips and/or styling tricks using the Kinky Curly products. Also---what to expect when using them? Elongated curls? Shrunken curls?

Thanks!!

Jan 2010: Still lovin it
recently I've shampooing with the KC come clean but I don't think it is necessary.

After shampooing, I apply KCKT, to detangle one section at a time. Once it has been rubbed in and my hair is no longer the color of the detangler, I've been putting flax seed gel on my hair. I think it gives my hair a little better hold and definition. Then I apply the KCCC.

Since I mainly wash my hair at night, I will loosely 2 strand twist my hair in big bunches put a night cap on go to bed. When I wake up my hair will be damp but at least not frizzy b/c of the twists. I take them out and off I go.
I apply the KCKT (sometimes I skip this step), then I apply another heavier conditioner b/c the KCKT is not moisturizing at all. It leaves my hair very dry and crunchy if I use it alone under the KCCC.

Next I'll seal with an oil, either castor oil or sweet almond.

Lastly, I apply the KCCC.

I do this all in small sections for a more uniform look or larger sections for bigger hair.

KCCC causes MAJOR shrinkage for me.

I do my hair almost EXACTLY like bouncy does hers. I love wash n gos and this helps me go out in the winter without dripping wet hair.

For me any gel or gel like substance on wet hair causes major shrinkage. It's lessened if you do chunky twists for some hours before wearing your hair out (i.e overnight) but it's still pretty bad. Even when I try out methods to prevent the shrinkage (using ponytail holders on the end of chunks of hair while drying) it still shrinks as soon as I take them out unless my hair is mostly dry.

I get good length with a wash n go when I use conditioners and oils.

Last week, I tried something a little different and I was quite pleased. I wore my hair in a bun all week (like I always do), then I took it down on friday to prepare for a night out.

This is old pic is an example of what my hair looks like after I take own the bun: http://public.fotki.com/MissKinkyCoi...re2.html#media

I rubbed in a little KBB Hair Milk (just a little because its very wet and can cause lots of shrinkage). Then I applied the KCCC section by section. It resulted in defined coils with minimized shrinkage.

Unfortnately, I do not have any good hair pics from that night, but if you blow up the attachments you can kind of see it.

I plan to try this again.

I also really like using KCCC on twist-outs . My hair comes out PERFECT. Shiny, defined, soft and fluffy with no frizz.

I do something similar to Naya.

*Apply leave in conditioner to hair & separate into about 4 or 5 sections
*To each section I apply a butter, KCNT, & a dab of castor oil. If the section seems too dry, I'll also add water.
*Next I split the section into 3 parts and apply the KCCC
*After each section is done, I let my hair air dry for the rest of the day. The result is a very defined but shrunken 'do.
*To combat the shrinkage, before I go the bed I carefully separate my hair into two sections and either band it or plait it.
*In the morning, I take down the plaits or bands, spritz with oyin's juices & berries and fluff my hair into place. The very front is usually a little bit more stretched out than the rest, so I add water to those parts to encourage them to shrink up a bit.

The first day my hair looks good but is a little bit harder than I'd like it to be. IMO, my hair looks it's best by the 3rd or 4th day. It's soft and fluffy, but the curls still look good.

So I gave in and got the KCCC and KCKT. . .oh, and castor oil. Washed my hair, did the KCKT (that was okay, not spectacular) put the castor oil on (think I used a bit too much, my hair felt REALLY thick and hard to comb thru), and then did the KCCC and twisted. . .I had MAJOR Shrinky-dink shrinkage!!! how can I minimize this and get some volume and length to my 'do????

Still not totally pleased with the style I have to say. I love my tiny lil curls, but I dont know...I think that maybe just maybe my hair has a ways to grow before it gets where I want it to be.... hmpf.
After washing/co-washing and conditioning, I get out of the shower and apply KCKT (or Giovanni Direct Leave-In) to small, soaking wet sections (about 16). I detangle/deshed then apply a small amount of KCCC to each section and twist. I don't layer any oils underneath the KCCC. If I do, the curls won't set properly. I very carefully take the twists out when my hair is about 80-90% dry. This is 1st day hair and it shrinks up something fierce, but my curls are VERY defined. I do not continue to touch, tug, or rub on my hair I leave it alone.

At the end of the 1st day (bed time) when my hair is 100% dry, I scrunch out any crunch with shea butter (or sometimes KC Gloss pomade), retwist the hair into 4 or 6 loose twists and tie a satin scarf around my head. In the morning when I take my hair down, my curls are stretched, defined, soft and fluffy.

Every night I retwist my hair into 4 or 6 twists. I may or may not add more shea butter (it just depends on how my hair feels). I find that as the week progresses, my curls look better.

Usually around the 5th or 6th day, my hair starts to get a little fuzzy so @ night, I splash my hair with some water (I do not add any additional product) and maybe a tiny amount of KCKT (or the Giovanni). This reactivates the KCCC and I again retwist into the 4 or 6 loose twists. In the morning, the fuzz is gone and the curls are back. My hair will shrink up again, but nowhere near as much as it did on the 1st day. Once I hit day 7 I wash it all out and start the cycle again.
I like my gels light, my oils heavy, my conditioners thick, and my curls long...

I LOVE THIS THREAD, JUST WHAT i WAS LOOKING FOR, BUT. . .. you all left me the same as confused. Oils before KCCC or no??? My trials with KCCC and Knot today find it to leave me so crunchy, it' gross and usually by the time it dries I'm in public somewhere, and I don't feel like scrunching in public. SO. . . . I have heard I need to use something more moisturizing with the Knot today, like oils or something. What is the truth?? What products, moisturizing either with oils or not, can be used before KCCC and not cause problems either with curl definition or residue stuff in your hair??? I do have Beautiful Curls defining cream which has coconut oil and shea butter, I thought maybe trying that with the Knot Today, before KCCC? Also, my conditioners have oils in them, is that going to be a major problem?
Can you name a couple of easy to find leave in conditioners taht you use in conjunction with the Knot Today, as you said you do use for more moisture?
