Is dry hair inevitable in the winter?
Im suffering from winter dryness right now. I'll admit it's my fault. I haven't been moisturizing as much as I should have been moisturizing and now i'm paying for it .
Is there anyone who has been taking all the necessary precautions (moisturizing, protecting, ect.)for the drying winter air, but is still experiencing the dryness??

I notice you like to use shea butter. Without knowing your whole routine it's hard to say what could be causing your problem, but shea could be the culprit and perhaps it's blocking out your moisture - ie. water. If you are using products with cones - that can also cause problems. When my hair gets over dry(which fortunately it hasn't lately thanks to my doing this), I clarify my hair. It's like getting a clean slate.
I like to use Redkin Cleansing Creme, and I probably only use it once a month. There are natural clarifiers such as baking soda or Rhassoul clay. I've never tried baking soda, but I have tried Rhassoul clay - it worked decently. Or there is also a V05 Clarifier that some people like.
Here's an interesting thread on natural clarifiers: Natural Clarifiers other than Baking Soda?
After using your clarifier of choice, deep condition and you should be ready to go again.
Hopefully that will help.

As soon as fall hit, I pulled out the Qhemet Heavy Cream and Hydrating Balm. I'd already been using my Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-In and Castor Oil to seal so I was good to go.

My hair was suffering from winter dryness until I bought a steamer. After using the steamer all my problems are gone.

I have naturally dry hair so I have been doing the heavy DT'ing since October. I do use more organic products though to DT and trap in the moisture. I also switch up my DTs to keep my hair guessing. I switch between AOHSR w/ honey, EVOO, Avocado Oil
rhassoul clay w/ vitamin E oil, marshmallow root
yogurt w/ banana, honey, EVOO
This has helped me tremendously. I use conditioner as a leave-in, then apply CO and shealoe. My hair remains soft and moisturized until wash day which is usually every 5-7 days.

It's inevitable but treatable...
I was/am experiencing the same thing. My hair is 4b with looser 4a in the front and nape of my neck. My hair was sooo dry and my ends were crunchy . It's growing nicely and I wanna keep up the progress. My BC 1 year anniversary was last month.... ! Yaaay!
I agree about switching up your DC. I used to DC every other weekend and now I do it every weekend. I did the banana and honey one weekend and that did wonders. I did a rhassoul clay mixed with AOHR another that was very cleansing. Then I use my fave DC MyHoneyChild Honey Hair Mask w/heat. I also spritz it miday with my own spritz of 100% Aloe gel, water, camelia oil, and EO's. This entire regimen has really helped. I also wrap it tight at night with a scarf, rather than loose in a satin cap, and try to manipulate it less. Before I add any type of hairdress cream I mist with moisture - that helps combat dryness ALOT. My fave moisture creams are: shea butter, I make my own shea, castor, aloe mix, and Quemet Burdock Root Butter Cream. Also I use lots of leave in, either Giovanni Direct or Darcy's leave in or good ol' heaven sent shea butter,

of course, if the air is colder and drier its gonna take quite a toll on your hair! you may find that instead of maybe dc-ing once a week you may have to dc more often. just replenishing ur hair with twice the moisture should really help out ur hair during the harsh winter. also, protective hairstyles help reduce breakage a lot. hope tht helped

I have been experiencing extreme dryness and tangles over the past several months. After many months of experimenting, I found out that extra virgin olive oil was causing all my problems. I was pre-pooing with it and/or adding it to my conditioners to add "moisture". Once I did an ACV rinse and stopped using the oil this past weekend, my hair was back to normal. I had been using extra virgin olive oil and GVP CB over the summer with great results. When the fall season hit, my hair was not the same. I will maybe try it again in the summer along with my products with glycerin.
