Castor Oil Smell...suggestions

I bought some castor oil yesterday to try as a sealant and the smell was very strong! To the point where I rinsed it out because the smell was that bad. The kind I bought says its for hair...

Do others find this? Is there anything I can do about this smell?

My castor oil is the plain kind and is odorless.

What brand did you get?

I know that the Jamaican Black Castor Oil has a smoky odor. They smell does absorb after a while though.

You can add and essential oil to fragrance it. Peppermint, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang stimulate growth. Lavendar relaxes. GNC and The Vitamin Shoppe carry a few EO's that are affordable. Whole Foods is outrageous. Local off brand health food stores usually offer a big selection.

Mine also is the clear plain kind. Now, to me, it does have a smell, but it's something that doesn't bother me. Maybe because I've been using it for so long.

But, like Kinky Rhonnie said you can mix in an essential oil to lessen the smell. Or, if you use it with other products, they should cancel out the smell of the castor oil.

Kinky Rhonnie, you answer every question I post on this forum! You're the best and give great advice! Thanks!!

I still want to know what brand it is because i'm nosy. lol

I wonder if it's old.

After Booker Ts Mama's posted I got to wondering if mine actually has a smell and I've become immune because I've been using castor oil so long (april '09). I use Home Health and Heritage.

Not sure that essential oils will help that stuff. lol. But it does absord after about an hour I think. I believe I have the Tropical Isle brand from Sams Carribean Market. I ordered it online at http://sams247.com/.

Just like other plant-based oils, Castor oil expires and that could lead to that "off" scent you discovered. Definitely check the oil's expiry date.

Yeah, I posted about this when I first started using Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I thought mine must be expired or something. Well, I've been through more than 10 bottles now and no. It's not expired. It just smells like rancid cow poo. IDK, maybe it's me cause people keep saying it smells "smokey". But there's nothing smokey about cow dung, at least not what I've smelled (I've lived on a farm)...

I use KBB hair cream over it and that eliminates the poo smell. Plus the smell doesn't last very long anyway. And it's a small price to pay cause for me JBCO is the bidness for my hair!

Aptlife, Many use basic castor oil versus Jamaican because basic is much easier to get on the ground and a much cheaper. It a personal choice. I have both but prefer the basic because jamaican smells like smoke to me.

I use the plain kind, and it smells icks to me...not that strong, but nothing I want my hair to smell like! I like massaging with it at night though, so it's not really a problem b/c I rinse it out the next day. When I finish this bottle I'm going to order from Sam's. Isn't JBCO thinner?

I like JBCO and its not thin at all. Very viscous. Kind of pours like honey. If you don't like the smell you can always add essential oils. It smells kind of like grease but it doesnt bother me too much. On Sams they have lavendar JBCO and it smells nice to me. I may add a little more lavendar because the castor oil is still strong but not too bad
