I stopped using gel altogether a few months ago after my last cut. Lately I've just been using Paul Mitchell The Conditioner after getting out of the shower. Leaves my hair soft but holds the curl a bit (might be the cone in it that helps do that). I think I have a problem with proteins, which are in a lot of the other leave-ins that folks have mentioned, so I'm always on the lookout for protein-free, or nearly so, products.
With creamy leave-ins I find that there's a fine line between using just enough and too much.
