When people are hurt or threatened by someone they often insult that person, but they don't really know what to say so they go for physical things or something that goes against the norm. Probably that girl was feeling threatened but of course didn't want to admit it so she insulted the other girls physical appearance. I used to work with students who had emotional and behavioral problems and they used to say things to me like, "You really need to straighten your hair." I'd reply with, "Is your problem really my hair?" Of course it wasn't, but they felt threatened by me and felt the only way they could defend themselves was to insult me. Unfortunately society wants us to straighten our hair, so that's what stands out as being different. It's sad when that happens. That girl probably even wishes she had curly hair.
