my Scottish great-grandmother owned a bakery in her native Aberdeen.
she had a recipe for fruitcake that would, indeed, make Heaven & Nature Sing!!!!
of course, the fact that you make this in September and then for the next 3 months douse it with liberal amounts of whiskey probably had something to do with it!!!!
my mother still has a copy of this recipe, written out in Granny Annie's spidery long hand when we visited her in Dublin in the spring of 1968. i still remember going to her tiny little apartment for high tea so that the ladies from her church could meet her great-granddaughters from Canada; she had made the entire spread of sandwiches, cookies and a big pink-iced lemon cake herself from scratch!
