I bought the organic kind from whole foods. I also bought the cheap kind from the grocery store. It does the same thing to my mom. It may just be a some kind of body chemical imbalance or something

that sounds awful! I have no idea about that!
I LOVE coconut oil. I use it to cook with every day but for the life of me I don't like smelling it on my hair.

It's antifungal so it could be removing toxins and or yeast.

I use it as a pre conditioning treatment only.
Hey Nunew:
I have recently started using coconut oil, and I have not had any bad experiences yet. I would reccommend you try blending some coconut oil with raw shea butter and organic honey. This may help. Also I do not use coconut oil by itself on my hair either. I hope everything works out for you!
Maybe I'm using it wrong. If I don't wash it out, it starts to smell. It is not better mix with shea butter or EVOO. I do co wash before using. I have no problems when I wash it out but I have to use shampoo. I think it's just me.

I have some of the best coconut oil money can buy (organic, cold-pressed, extra virgin, yadda yadda!) and it totally smells awful in my hair after a couple of hours. I only use it in very small amounts in my oil mixtures and as a prepoo.

Wow, I've never heard of that either. I got my coconut oil from Whole Foods as well and it smells so good that I want to eat it lol. I don't use it with anything besides leave-in. The brand is Jarrow Formulas...Hope u find one that works for you
I'm still trying to ascertain if my hair is feeling coconut oil. I don't think it really likes coconut oil for pre-poo. As a matter of fact, my hair didn't like olive oil for pre-poo, either. I can, however, used a bit of either on my ends. It seems that my hair has responded the most favorably, so far, to jojoba oil.
Your hair is your most important accessory.

I notice that smell when I use coc0nut oil on my daughter's hair, and she chooses to flat iron. I thought it was the oil going rancid with the heat. As long as she does not heat her hair, she is fine.

-opening old post-

I notice a 'rancid' smell when I do not wash my hair. By wash I mean running my hair under water.

The smell seems to me to be my sweat or oil mixing with dirt and other chemicals in the air and the EVCO.

When I rinse the hair and then reapply a small amount of EVCO in the shower (to replace any that may have been rinsed out), the smell is gone again. I only need to do this when the smell appears, which is usually a few days after the initial use of the oil.

I cowash every day, every other day is the longest I'll go. I just love taking showers! So I've never had that problem.
Ca m'a fait de la pé-peine!
It smells very tropical and exotic. I like it. maybe your coconut oil is bad
Usually a good coconut oil product has a good smell to it and makes your hair smell nice. You should change your brand. Also, go with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil products, which are normally good rich quality natural products. Here's a article I wrote recently on some good Extra Virgin Coconut Oil products to consider: http://tinyurl.com/239swb8 Hope this helps.
