When I first started CGing, I used AVG as my gel some of the time. I liked it, but the AVG I was using became unavailable, and although FOTE works, I liked the other better.
I appear to be in the minority, and it's worth noting that my hair is extremely light because it's so ridiculously fine that it's all but invisible.

Morgan, just curious -- what AVG were you using that is now unavailble? Periodically I will use Lily of the Desert AV Gelly, although it has gone through several formula changes since I started using it years ago.

It's 99.9% pure cold processed aloe gel labeled “aloe99” and manufactured by Lee Pharmaceuticals (800-950-5337). At the time I was using it, it came in a green tube with predominantly white type IIRC.

Bummer that it's not available anymore. I wonder if it morphed into a different AV product or if you can buy it in bulk and split the order with others?

Yes, I have. It gives a soft hold. I used Trader Joes Aloe Vera and Theraneem leaf and Aloe vera gel.

Apparently aloe99 is still available. I just found it on Amazon via an outside vendor, and Prime shipping isn't offered. It was available on the ground for me, at my local pharmacy, but they stopped carrying it.

Thanks for posting that.
OT, I was tempted to try Amazon Prime but $79 is a lot for me (I don't have that many Amazon orders in a year to break even on the shipping cost saved since I do book swapping more than book buying). Also, since outside vendors aren't included, I am even less likely to break even.

Also OT, somethings from outside vendors on Amazon are sent by free shipping under Amazon Prime. That just isn't one of them at this time.

Aloe
I've heard very mixed reviews on AVG. What I did was this: I took the remaining AVG I had left over from the summer (for when I'm sunburned) and dumped it in my spitz bottle. Too soon to give any accurate assesment, but it's a slow way to ease in to it.

Avg is a styling staple of mine. I use FOTE brand. I sometimes mix this with coconut oil, a little honey, & vegetable glycerin to make a curling pudding. I have used LOTD AVG for eating & adding to my shea butter and DT. But latley I have been using the fote avg on naked hair with evoo on top.

I wet my hands, and rub the waterover the spot or area where I need the gel. Then I take the aloe vera gel (I also use Trader Joes version) and smooth it over my hair with my hands. I DON'T use a brush. Then, I continue to smooth my hair into the style I want. Once I'm satisfied with it, I tie it down with a satin scarf for a little while. And ta-da! lol.

It is the best product for your hair.
I have used Lilly of the desert before, but now I bought an aloe vera gel (made to be a drink) at Whole Foods. It is their own brand (called 365). I open it, keep it in the fridge for up to a year (the bottle is almost 1lt), I use just a bit on my hand when my hair is still quite wet, it is like a hair treatment, all natural, it lasts a long time and it is not expensive.
I regret not using this before, wasted so much money on mousse...not to mention they are full of chemical crap. I also used a brand called Aloex (with no flavors) but I can't find it anywhere anymore.

One time I tried using aloe vera gel in place of my regular hair gel, and it didn't do anything to help the frizz Since too much gel can make my hair stiff and crunchy, perhaps it would be good to mix the two together, and perhaps even add some glycerin.
