I am about to start the castor oil challenge this upcoming friday and I wanted to know if any of you ladies have done it. If so what were your results and experiences and do you have any reccomendations for this challenge (tips and tricks).And if you haven't tried this challenge yet feel free to join me at anytime on this journey. tell me, please, what is this about?
I've been trying castor oil lately and I really like it.
I've noticed it is thicker than other oils i've tried.
When used to condition, it stretches (don't confuse with straighten) my curls a little bit, but nicely. Which is fine for me, since I did a big chop last month and like to think it is already growing jejeje.
On monday I used it to style my hair. After cowashing, applied a little leave-in conditioner (knot-today) then I rub a little of oil in the palms of my hand and put it on my hair, right side, crown and back of my head, then left side.
I was about to leave it that way, but I felt I needed a lil bit more of cond so I applied very little between my hands and ran it through my hair. then left it air dry.
the result? WONDERFUL frizz free, defined, moisturized, beautifully bouncing curls. Even my boyfriend, who is in another city and saw me via skype that night, complimented my hair.
and on top of that, it is very cheap here, the 2oz. little bottle is us$0.75 (I live in Dom. Rep)
I am up to any challenge with castor oil. Specially if it onvolves growing, as I am growing my hair from a recent BC.

The castor oil challenge is three months long. During those three months you should apply castor oil to your scalp and the roots of your hair at least three times a week (you can apply more often if you would like). During this challenge you should begin to notice thicker healthier growth. Of course results may vary.

S.N. It sounds like this challenge should be a breeze for you and it looks like you have already begun to see some good results from using castor oil.

I will be using Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil but any brand of pure castor oil will work.

I would recommend using either your fingertips or an applicator bottle. Whichever is easier for you.

Yup. Fingertip or an applicator bottle. I use a clean mustard/ketchup squeeze bottle with the pointy tips. Also, you can try diluting it with a different oil if it's too thick and make it easier to spread. I used coconut and olive oil, which is also said to help with growth.

I can mix it with olive oil which I love, because Castor oil sure is thick. Tomorrow i'll get the mustard bottle, or try (as the storm Sandy had floded the island), but anyway, since I have used it on monday and wednesday, Let's consider we have started, shall we?

That's great! I'm very excited to get started on this challenge tonight. Also ladies don't forget to document your journey with photos if possible. I would also recommend doing a length check at the beginning of this journey to help keep up with progress.

I have the applicator already. Something. How is the best way to make a length check?

I took a curl from my nape, a lock from the crown and a curl from the front, and measured it with a ruler. is that ok?

You can use a ruler or you can use reference points on your body. For example the hair from my nape falls about a half an inch below my shoulder and the hair in the front of my hair falls a quarter of an inch below my chin. Another method commonly used is using an old tshirt and marking on it where your hairs falls when you do length checks.

The hair of my nape barely touches by back (shoulder) and the hair in the front with luck touches the tip of my nose.

Congrats on your bc!!!! As your grows out this is a method you can use to mark hair growth. Look at it as a way to have the memory of and be able to see your hair journey.

I recommend you to read the "baggying" thread. It has information about growth and some tips we can include in our "castor oil challenge".

My measures were 4 inches in the front, 4 inches in the back(nape) and 5 inches in the crown.

I love love love the baggying method. Since I am currently growing out hair dye this has aided in length retention and has kept my hair from breaking off. It is also great in keeping the ends of my hair moisturized.

I hope that all of you ladies are seeing great benefits from this challenge. In the week and a half that I have been using I have already noticed that my scalp is a lot less itchy and moisturized. This oil has proved to be a great sealant for my hair and is really growing on me.

YES it is an awesome sealant. I haven't measure my hair yet, since I decided to do it monthly, but I can feel it is thicker, stronger near the roots and people usually tells me "oh! your hair is growing!!" anyway I dont pay too much attention to that, since it is easy to see an afro bigger, than seeing long hair longer.

The days I massage the castor oil I sleep with a plastic bag.
