Hey all

I have curly thick hair (I think 3c)
My haircare routine is:
In the evening I brush my hair dry, put a leave in conditioner in and braid my hair
In the morning I take my braids out and I'm ready to go. Most of the time I put my hair in a bun.

Lately I've been reading more about curly hair. I keep reading on the internet that it's bad to brush your hair dry and I believe they're right. My hair could be stronger and sometimes I think I lose too much hair. Tomorrow I'm going to buy a wide tooth comb and start with my new haircare routine.

I have one question..Do you all comb your hair in the morning? I'd rather not comb my hair in the morning so what's the best thing to do? They say you need to wet or damp curly hair and then comb it but I also don't want to sleep with damp/wet hair (bad) What to do?
If you don't want to sleep with wet hair then get a spray bottle, fill it with water and spray your hair lightly.

Then divide your hair into sections, put a conditioner on a section then comb it.

When you are combing gently work from the ends to the roots.

There are quite a few curlies who sleep with damp hair but others use a drier.

To be honest if you work out how little water you can get away with and don't do it last thing your hair may actually have enough time to dry before you go to sleep.
I comb my hair once a week on wash day either in the shower with conditioner on my hair or if I prepoo, I "wet" my hair with avj mixed with a little olive oil and brush it with my denman to detangle. Throughout the week, I use my fingers to detangle if needed.

I'm thinking if you don't brush out your curls, you may not need to braid it every night; you can just keep your natural curl definition by not brushing it away. Maybe just put on a moisturizer and pineapple, bun it and/or put a bonnet or scarf on for bed and your curls should hold up some.
Will your hair hold up if you just comb it in the shower and that's it? Mine tends to get tangly on the 3rd day, and I have a much looser pattern than you, so not sure how that would work for you. However, I do find if I leave a good amount of conditioner in my hair, when I get it wet it detangles a lot easier. I second the spray bottle idea. I mix a bit of conditioner in my spray bottle for refreshers in the morning, so this would probably work for detangling as well.

Welcome!

Just don't comb it every day, wavy and curly hair is not tangle free, that is the nature of the beast. Consider your overnight routine if you are waking up with tangles or frizz, use a silk or satin pillowcase and 'pineapple' your hair.

Thanks for all the advice! I bought a neem wide tooth comb today. I'm going to spray my hair tonight with water, put some leave in conditioner , comb it and try the pineapple method. In the morning I will only spray my hair with water if needed and I won't comb my hair everyday anymore This is a healthy haircare routine I guess
Personally, I only comb my hair on wash days when I'm in the shower with my hair covered in conditioner - and I only comb with my fingers not an ACTUAL comb.

I only do this to refresh it and make sure the conditioner covers every hair and to loosen all the shedded strands that have gotten tangled. I really don't see the point in combing your hair on non-wash days. Curly hair don't care

@BoticelliBrit I agree with what you just posted as well. Are you an oil person? I really enjoy sealing the moisture in as well.

@bringingcurliesback I actually haven't tried using oils to seal yet (I've only recently finished my transition). I use coconut as a pre-poo though and LOVE it what oils would you recommend for sealing? I have some sweet almond and grapeseed I bought a while back and never got around to using.

i try to stay as natural as i can, i detangle with my fingers really carefuly, i do it in the shower when my hairs wet, i do it as careful as i can, i really just "seperate" my curls with my fingers and pick the knots and tanlged out. then i wash, every 3rd or 4th day, (depending on my hair looks). then i add my rinse out conditioner and keep finger detanlging till i can run my hands through my hair with out finding any knots. some days more, same days less.
after my shower, i pat my hair dry with a normal towl, mix my "leave in" which is just a normal light condish, and an oil in the palm of my hands, then i work it through my hair. when im raking that through i get the last few knots/shed hair out. after that i mix my mousse with a diff oil and add that with my head upsidedown.
when im done, (now that its getting colder and i finally got a hair dryer and defuser) sometimes i defuse my hair sometimes i let it air dry. after i finished with my routine i've always got a crazy head full of knot free curls.

my hair: 3b, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
Oils and my own procuts are my hairs best friend
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.
I have found that I do need to thoroughly comb my hair before putting it in a protective style. I typically put it into sections-only when its wet and use a wide tooth comb. I then leave my protective style in for a couple of days before repeating.

I have found that if you use a good hot oil treatment once a week, you will strengthen your hair and see less breakage. You should not neglect to do this. Leave in conditioners are awesome for styling and manipulating curls, but the hot oil treatment will quickly begin to strengthen your hair,
I only comb in the shower ... My hair will knot up on the 2nd and. 3rd days though ... I usually ignore it unless it is big until I wash again ... I still wash my hair every other day though
Hair Type: Combo of 2A, 2B and 2C ... with a weird straight underlayer

@BotticelliBrit you should try it. I know a lot of lower porosity curlies like using buttery products.
I can get away with most oils. Almond and coconut are a tad heavier but that might be what your looking for. Aome people like lighter ones like jojoba etc. I think it has kore to do with how you apply it really! After your leave in seal it with an oil. The apply product. Soem even like mixing it in gels. Endless possibility I tell you! And sorry for such a crazy late reply !

I heard some people mix a bit of coconut oil in with their conditioner and get great results, so I'm tempted to try this during the week when I don't have time to pre-poo.

(I'll also try sealing this weekend with some Jojoba and let you know how I get on!)

Where so you buy all you non shea moisture products? Just curious cause your hair seems kind of like mine. Since my haircut its kind of hard to style short hair ironicaly.
