recent'y ive found that my hair is going in a negative direction, im not sure if its because of the products that I use or if its the way I comb my hair or my diet or what ever, but im not happy with it. I've been thinking about doing a no hair product challenge. I want to see how my hair changes when I just let it be how it wants to be naturally. Any ideas on how I could start?
When you say no hair product. . . .do you mean no shampoos/cleansers, no conditioners, and no stylers? Or do you mean no stylers or gels; things like that? I'd definitely scream NOOOOOOO and hold you hostage if you mean no conditioners at all, you know, that is if you were my friend and I knew you face to face.

If you just mean store bought products, that's also a different story. My deep treatments and protein treatments lately have been made up of foods rather than a product from the store. I've gotten recipes from searching threads here, googling, and searching youtube.

As far as how to start- figure out what you're trying to replace/remove from your current product line-up? Then search for recipes, and learn what makes a good product good (like glycerin for slip, or coconut oil b/c it can penetrate the hair shaft, etc). Once those things are decided you can gather your materials and get started.
3C/4A, fine texture, low-medium density, and low porosity
CG since November 2013.

Pre-Poo: infrequent now, Coconut Oil overnight
Shampoo: Curls unleashed/for occasional sulfate wash when needed, everlasting sunshine.
Conditioner: Suave Naturals Everlasting Sunshine and GVP's conditioning balm.
Styler: iagirl's flaxseed curl cream or gelatin gel/conditioner mix. <3
PT: iagirl's gelatin treatment 3-4 times a month, with conditioner/honey/avj
I'm going on one of these challenges this year for 2-3 months. I recently experienced some slight heat damage so I'm curious to see what this challenge does for my hair if anything (I realize I will have to do some trimming eventually). I'm not big on shampoo so I'm not that worried however I have caught the PJ bug. I'm almost six months natural after a year long transition. I'm not exactly sure what I'll be using but my EVOO, EVCO, some avocado, baking soda, apple cider vinegar and raw egg will definitely be present!!!
I definitely understand, I recently experienced some heat damage. Maybe try upping the moisture??? I know pre pooing has brought my hair a long way!!! I stay away from heat for WEEKS at a time. I'm not sure if you're familiar but look up the Curly Girl Method. It will vary from person to person but some things remain consistent. You can tweak the method a little to fit your lifestyle, budget, etc.
I'd like to leave my hair to dry naturally after I wash it one day. I'd still put in a leave-in to keep it form drying out, but no stylers or anything. I'd be interested to see how it dries without gel and such; whether it can still be defined or if it just ends up in a frizzy poof.

Maybe this weekend if I don't have plans I'll give it a try. It'll be funny, if nothing else lol
3A with some 3B thrown in. Medium porosity. Medium Thickness. High density.

Botticelli, I had been toying with a similar idea. I haven't gotten a hair analysis yet and wonder if I'm truly low porous. I frequently see the suggestion of allowing naked hair to dry to see how long it takes but have been too chicken to do it. . .Even though I know my hair is short enough right now that rewetting and styling wouldn't be as huge of a problem as when it gets longer.

The other day I cowashed and then rinsed out the excess and had let my hair dry with nothing. It was fine but I am wondering if doing that for a prolonged time would effect the protection of hair. I am just curious if conditioner does provide a protective layer when leaving in. That would be my only concern when not using any product for more than a few days.

It's really important you keep your hair moisturised, so I'd say to still use a leave-in if you're planning to do this more than once. Otherwise your hair may dry out (and that's never good).

I think I'm going to use my sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and use coconut oil and that's it and experiment with that
I'm so curious about this! It's a good idea to do that. Do you mind posting updates?

Love cowashing and then just adding a bit of coconut oil. Not very much hold, but nice bouncy lightweight curls.

For myself, my hair had so much more volume, but ager about 2-3 days, my tangles were really bad and the frizz overcame the curls.

I used to do this the first time I went CG - just wash and do a RO and put coconut oil in. I really liked the coconut oil, but it can get greasy after a day or so, and my hair eventually dried out. I think I did this for like 3 months - I would not recommend for a prolonged period of time. It did make my curls looks nice, but it also took forever and five days to dry.
2c-3a - coarse - normal-high porosity - high density - growing out to donate

RO/LI: Sevi Pumpkin Seed DC / CJ Argan & Olive Oil, KCKT, YTBbs
DT: Coconut Oil + scalp massage
OIL/STYLER: SM Elixir / KCCC, SS CEJ
COLOR: henna, amla & indigo
My hair would be a mess if I tried this.
Fine 2c-3a Curls

Henna over color-treated hair
Not currently CG
Poo: Pureology hydrate
RO: Pureology hydrate
LI: HSH Tri-wheat spray
DT: Coconut oil
PT: Henna/Cassia
Styler: AG recoil/mousse-gel
That's been my routine for years. Sometimes I use a leave in, special occasions, but honestly I can't stand the feel of anything but CO.
