Default Chia Pet Seeds

Ok...I saw a report that stated the seeds from the Chia pet kits are healthy to eat - even healthier than flax seeds. I have no idea what kind of seeds they are but the mention of flax seeds in the same story made me think...I wonder if they would make a good gel???!!! I may have to pick up a chia pet and try and make a gel from them. Yep, I am officially over the edge. Pull me back.

I found you can just buy the seeds. And they are officially Salvia Columbariae seeds.

Hmmm...it looks promising as a gel - I found this info:

If you try mixing a spoonful of Chia in a glass of water and leaving it for approximately 30 minutes or so, when you return the glass will appear to contain not seeds or water, but an almost solid gelatin. This gel-forming reaction is due to the soluble fiber in the Chia. Research believe this same gel-forming phenomenon takes place in the stomach when food containing these gummy fibers, known as mucilages, are eaten. The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar

I purchased Chia seeds for the health benefits, but wasn't able to tolerate the super thick snot like way they gel up. Gagging at the thought of it as I type. They gel up in anything that contains liquid or moisture. The gel that forms is so much thicker than flax seeds. Also the chia seeds are tinier than a pin head, so I'm not sure you would be able to strain the seeds out. The longer they sit in a liquid substance the thicker they get. They are kind of expensive too.

ok for the sake of nothing better to do...I put some chia seeds in water, let them gel up and attempted to strain them. I put them in the finest strainer I have, kept stirring with a spatula and nothing! The litte bit of moisture on the underside of the strainer, felt water like. Not tacky/ sticky like flax seed. The seeds kind of swell up and become encapsulated in the gel. Hard to explain. I guess I could try the nylon thing, but something tells me that's not going to work either. Flax seeds are much cheaper anyway!

How about a muslin tea bag?? I used to do my flax seeds that way so I didn't have to strain them. Can one buy chia seeds locally?

The gel that forms from the chia seeds is gelatinous (like Knox gelatin) feels like thick water. Whereas I think the gel from flax seeds is more like an egg yolk, kind of tacky. The flax seeds seem to release from the gel easily for the most part. You know how flax seeds harden up in the pan if you don't rinse immediately, chia seeds rinse away easily.

Before anyone purchases any, I'd be happy to share my lot of seeds. PM me if you'd like me to send you some. I have about 3/4 of pound left.

LOL! I had this idea like a year ago, right after I ordered a pound of flax seeds from Mountain Rose Herbs and continued playing with their site! I saw how the chia seeds became a gel and decided to get some once I'd used up the flax seeds.

They have got to be rancid or stale or something by now. Never even opened the bag.

So, yeah...Mountain Rose Herbs also sells chia seeds. And it's interesting that the seeds remain in the gel, it didn't sound like it in the description. Anyone tried the bag thing yet? Chia seeds may be more expensive, but I can't simmer things in my dorm room...which would be the reason that those poor flax seeds went to waste.

Got my chia seeds from SusieQ yesterday. She enclosed some very informative literature. They are a rich source of Omega 3 and 6. If ingested, the gel is supposed to be a dietary aide--not only the Omega oils, but it helps you utilize carbs better (blood sugar) and keeps you full longer.

I put some in a muslin tea bag and added water from Instahot according to the recommended ratio. Am letting it steep. The gel is supposed to keep in the refrigerator for two weeks. Even if this doesn't work in my hair, I'm going to definitely try it as a dietary supplement!

Sorry, I meant to update yesterday--but forgot. I let it steep for an hour. No discernible thickening. I took the seeds out of the bag--they were all clumped together, so I used a whisk to separate them in the bowl and let it sit. I had a gelled liquid with little seeds. No hair product. I've started adding the gel to my morning yogurt, etc. I will add seeds when the gel is gone--didn't want to waste it.

I think it will take time to see if it's an appetite suppressant! Everything I've read says these are really good for you. So, it can't hurt.
