Hairdresser in Melbourne for formal updo?

Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a hairdresser in Melbourne, preferably the northern suburbs, for naturally curly formal hairstyles? I have a wedding to attend in November, and have just been invited to a black tie dinner NEXT WEEK! (Yikes!) I’d love to wear my hair pinned up for both occasions, without the stress of trying to do it myself, but need to find a hairdresser who will try to understand and work with my natural curls rather than simply put my hair in rollers and give me new ones!

I’ve been trialling a hairdresser who was recommended by a friend whose hair is much curlier than mine – he has cut my hair twice and although the cut seems fine (a bit ‘generic’ but OK), I don’t like the way he styles my hair afterwards. Lots of sticky product, lots of hot air, and I end up with fairy floss instead of hair. He won’t do formal styles anyway – another stylist at the same salon does them, and I am not sure if I am prepared to trust him with my hair either…

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. For the record, my hair is 2c/3a (but the curls drop out fairly easily) and just below shoulder length (so I don’t have all that much to work with, although I am growing it out for the wedding).

I haven't yet tried her myself (will do when i allow myself to cut my hair again!) but I have read great reviews about lucy at cast in fitzroy. She has curls herself and enjoys styling curls (from what I hear) They have a website so be sure to check it out. Could always try having a consultation and see how you go from there. I think one of the girls one here tried her out last year?

Thanks curlywurlygurly - I have seen your pictures on fotki, and my hair is actually similar to yours, before you had it cut short (when mine is behaving, that is. Still experimenting with products.)

Yes, I've read good things about Lucy too, so think I will give her a try. I'm on a mission to find a good hairdresser - I have put up with 'ordinary' cuts and styles in the past, but really want to have nice hair for this wedding in November! However, I'm not sure about my chances of getting a time with Lucy for this Wednesday so I may have to figure something else out...

oooh might have found myself a hair twin yay!! Not sure what mines gonna turn out like this time around, all natural etc - bit nervous as it seems different since I cut it all off. Dw i too am still experimenting with products. I'm sproting experimental hair right now... gonna have to clip bits up to make it look acceptable, haha!

Give lucy a try, if you can't get in there use to be an awesome thread on perhaps the newbie thread (i'll try find it) that walked you through telling your stylist what you want them to do. You could even take along your own products to get her to use if you like.

Do you know what kind of up-do you want??

My mum used to tell me I should get my hair cut really short, but I've never been game enough to do it!

Just called Cast and made an appointment to get my hair done on Wednesday - not by Lucy but one of their style directors, Sally. Guess I should have asked for Lucy specifically, but it's such short notice and I always get a bit nervous on the phone to hairdressers Silly, I know. Anyway, it will give me a chance to check the place out and enquire about getting Lucy to cut my hair next time.

As for the up-do, I'll be happy with whatever my hair will allow! Nothing too elaborate - curls pinned up/back softly, a little fullness around my face, and maybe some tendrils hanging down at the sides and back. Classic all-up or half-up for Wednesday, and maybe a romantic low bun for the wedding... Not sure. Apparently my appointment includes a 'consultation' to decide what would look best on me, so I am looking forward to that.
