Book Club: The Dress Lodger--Chapter 1

Okay bookworms...
Here's the thread...discuss!
GREAT! Guess it's time to start reading!
I'm off to the library tomorrow morning!
I will pick it up tomorrow!
I have it in my hot little hands.....going to start tomorrow.

Shall we have threeads for each chapter,so we don't spoil anything for anyone?
got mine on Saturday...even has a reading group section inside--I haven't looked at it yet, cause there's another book I've been trying to finish for a year (excellent novel, it just took me three tries to start it without being sucked into something else before chapter 5--almost done)

I'll check out the reading group section and see if they have any suggestions as to how to 'run'/'moderate' the discussion

whoo--hoo! seems like we're actually gonna do this!
I have finished chapters 1-3,I'm trying to go slow so we can discuss.

Without giving anything away-I will say I like the style of writing, very descriptive,I feel like I am there!

I think I'll like this book!
Since I have no idea if anyone else has read very far I'll be vague...at first I thought it was overly-descriptive. I kept thinking, "Get on with the story already!" but by the end of chapter 2/beginning of 3 I was much more into it. Either I've found the flow of the book or things really are starting to pick up.
So--I just finished Chpt 1 (after being up til 2 last night to finish off my other book )

I really like her style of writing and drawing the reader in. Like Mar said, I feel like I'm there. I thought it was very effective how she opened, it was almost as though there was an empty stage and the various characters/stalls etc just appeared.
I like her use of color--esp her description of the blue dress, and how the blue was compared to theater productions of natural events, which emphasizes how industrialized/urbanized the setting is.

Mixxed feelings about her calling the reader 'you' and a character in the story--it's a neat idea, and does draw me in to the story, however, it feels almost like an cheap artifice...I guess I'll have to see how it continues, if it does.

Anyone else?
She certainly captures "filth" and "grime"...I feel like I need a shower every time I put the book down.

I know!
Can't you just SMELL the place???
It totally took me by suprise as I was beginning the book, she's describing the filth and all, but in a very non-harsh kind of way, more as an aside, then all the sudden she's talking about frogs ****ing and spawning! I was like "Whoa! where did that come from"! Also this book ties in alot to things that already happened, is this a follow-up novel?

I am up to Ch 5 and it very sad, the way the people don't have real names just words assigned to them based on their looks.
This has been a crazy week for me--I just picked up the book today!! But I'm a fast reader, I'll catch up to you all in no time.

I thought the unexpected use of 'harsh language' was interesting, and kind of emphasized the acceptance of ugly/harsh things in that world. Even though I'm not a prude, I was a little shocked by it...

I'm pretty sure it's not a sequel or a take off on anything--it's probably just her writing style and the reader is just tossed into the deep end, so to speak.

I agree.

I couldn't help myself and finished it last night!
I am enjoying it. The reader is thrown into the deep end, the way the stories of the murders and his mentor are talked about, without real explanation of how he came to be where he is.

Now that the his fiancee has met Gustine's baby, it will be interesting to see how he reacts to all that.

I'm gonna try to sit down with it tonight and this weekend and finish it up--I think it might be that the books are better discussed after we've read them thru.
Plus that's what I've seen on other web book clubs--they vote for a book and then set a date to start discussing a few weeks later.

I started it last night and I'm up to chapter 7. I'm enjoying it very much. I love being so engrossed in the way they lived. The descriptions of people and places really pull you in. All those frogs would drive me looney!!

Sandy
Ok, I finished it on Friday night, anyone else? I'm ready to discuss! I will say that I thought it was a very good book.

Sandy
