How to get this look (SJP)

I'm loving this look from when Carrie first meets Aiden and I can't figure out if it's her natural curls or an iron.

Any ideas? Can't figure out the top is smoother with the big curls b/c her natural hair is tighter curls.

You might get something like this by smoothing your top hair and making making a few large pincurls with the lower part of your hair.
Thanks. I've never tried pin curls but now I want to.

Just a quick tip though..reallllllly make sure you never twist the hair when rolling it up or wrapping around your finger (watch a few youtube vids esp lisafreemontstreet or strawberrykoivintage or fleurdiliss and you will undertand what I mean), you can also use a cold curling iron/make up brush or hair brush handle to wrap the hair round then slide of to make a perfect curl. Much faster and gaureenteed uniform curls.

oooh and brushing out is the key to removing the volume at the top.
Mixture of 2c/3a curls, fine to med texture

PROTEIN LOVER!!!

Wishing my hair would be more like this ------>
and less like this --------->
Ugh, I hate how all the pretty curly looks I see on celebs aren't really natural at all!

Do you think this look would be possible with out pin-curling?

How do you think her hair itself is cut/layered?

Thanks!
waves, loose coils, and cherub curls (=mixed 2s through 3a), very fine texture overall (but with medium and even coarse strands scattered throughout)
