manic panic? (do i need bleach??)

Okay so I was gonna dye my hair with a semi-permanent black, and then bleach out highlights to re-dye with crazy colors, but
well i don't wanna bleach that much.

Okay so i have naturally dark brown hair
this is the best picture i have (ignore my dopey face, althoguh that was a pretty good hair day http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/8018/smokies013.jpg

i want to use manic panic because it's vegan, doesn't test on animals and has great color and doesn't damage your hair. (does it have cones???? i wouldn't think so)

so, basically i want to like, paint individual curls with color. (i don't wanna dye my whole hair haha). Would the highlight it gives my hair be noticeable enoguh to have a good contrast with the rest of my hair? I'll proably use heat and leave it on overnight, too. and i'm CG so no shampoo. (do yah have to shampoo it out the first tim?)

does anyone have a picture of manic panic on unbleached hair? (dark)

also, what color would show up best--i was thinking green, blue, purple, or red. i love the blue and purple but i thought the red might show up best.

your thoughts?

okay, if you have black hair, manic panic won't work on it. if you leave it on overnight, it'll give a slight tint that's only noticible in the sunlight, but it'll still be black. like if you put blue on it, in the sunlight it'll look blue-black. it won't look like an unnatural color.
i suggest you bleach first.

well, it's not black--is it even possible for a white girl to have naturally black hair? ANd i decided against dying it.

But if it's a dark brown anyway, will it still not be enough?

If i only bleach once, (or will i need to do it a couple times?) will it permanently damage my hair? I'm not planning on rebleaching the parts, just maybe i might redyde them (although i doubt i'll use all the dye the first time)

Yes, white girls can have black hair. *insert confused smiley here*

As the other poster mentioned, on DARK hair -- anything beyond dark blonde, really, you'll only get a highlight. The brightness of the highlight will decrease as the depth of color increases.

If you don't re-bleach the new growth, and just touch it up, you will still experience the same effect: the new growth will be barely a highlight, whereas re-coloring the bleached part will reinstate the brightness. What I'm saying is that you will have a noticeable demarcation between bleached and unbleached as your hair grows, even if you keep touching up with the Manic Panic.

Bleaching always causes some damage, but it's not typically irreparable. Careful treatment, lots of protein followed by moisture, should mitigate the damage but no, you will never escape all damage when bleaching hair -- it's just the way bleach works.

If you get a proper bleach kit -- not a blonde hair color kit -- you will should only have to bleach virgin hair once to get it light enough to take a bright color. If you want to maintain the brightness of the streaks, you will have to bleach the new growth before applying the color. Otherwise, like I said, you'll only get a highlight.

hahah i meant, I've never seen a white person with naturally JET black hair, like usually jsut really dark brown--not the kind of black I see on ethnic girls, which was something that alwas onfused me.

Oh, I meant I wasn't gonna rebleach the parts i'd already bleached--i don't mind the roots, who has naturally blue or green or red hair anyway? (well not that red)

I was just wondering, because i looked up on the actual manic panic site, and the Long Hair ocmmunity site and there were people who had pictures of their hair dyed with manic panic without bleaching (and they had brown hair, i think one had the same shade as me) and especially the vampire red still gave a VERY strong highlight, just not the super unnatural color.

But I don't know if that's usual or if they were just incredibly lucky

screamforyou 08-07-2010 11:13 PM

well i have very dark brown hair and i put some rock n roll red on it for a little over 2 hours without bleaching. it ended up dark reddish brown, but the tint was noticable.
& yeah i've heard that vampire red, i was going to try it on my hair but they didn't have it so i took a chance with rock n roll red.
do you have the link to the post?

nezumikiriq 08-08-2010 01:17 PM

Let me see if i can find it

here's a link to the manic panic page
http://www.manicpanic.com/tips.html

and i'm looking for the LHC forum page
this isn't the one i found before but it might be helpful
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ad.php?t=17602

I can't find the other one.

Unrelated, but while i was on there i also read a lot about wrapping hair to straighten but keep the body.....I wonder if anyone on NC does that?

Just so you know, white girls are "ethnic" too. Actually everyone is. Whatever your ethnic background is...yup, you are "ethnic" too!:compress:

Yes, you need to bleach first!

I have pink, magenta and purple in my hair. (Special Effects Atomic Pink, Virgin Rose and Wildflower.) I have my stylist do the bleach and inital color application and then do my own touch ups. You're right about the roots - I don't mind the roots at all because who really has pink hair? LOL!

I use Special Effects - it's way better than MP. I love their Atomic Pink. Atomic Pink doesn't fade out, it grows out. I clarify before touching up, dry my hair, then apply the color and cap it and hang out with it for a few hours on my head. Do vaseline around the ears and hairline or it will stain your skin! I only need to touch up every 3 months or so, the color stays vibrant and fun for a very long time with Special Effects. When I was using Manic Panic, I had to touch up every week to keep my color vibrant and bright. I touched up overnight, with a clarifying wash first then I dried my hair, then applied color and capped, and carefully wrapped it in a towel I didn't mind staining and slept like that, then washed it out in the morning. I buy SE from punk.com, they recently had a bogo 50% off sale and it might still be going on. I highly recommend them!

Don't use shampoo to wash it after you color. A little cowash is fine, then a nice deep conditioner to restore moisture. Heavy protein pulls out my color and my curls, but YMMV.

Happy coloring to you!

When it comes to the red colors I've seen a lot of examples of it working on unbleached brunettes. I haven't seen any other colors on unbleached hair. If you're going to highlight I suggest not dying the curls you're going to highlight black, just separate them somehow (maybe with foil).

Here are pictures of Rock 'n' Roll Red on unbleached brunette hair:

And this is Ariana Grande who inspired me to do my hair this color, I don't think she bleached her hair because this color on bleached hair is much much brighter:

I'm going to dye my hair Rock 'n' Roll Red without bleaching, I'll post a pic once it's done :)

punkylemon 09-29-2012 06:10 AM

Dont know if anyone will see this but I'll try anyway.

I have naturally dark brown almost black hair too and what to dye it a deep green(manic panic enchanted forest) I don't want to bleach my hair though, unless it's absolutely necessary I guess.
I was thinking of lightening it with a box dye first then applying the green, will this work?

Johari 10-07-2012 01:58 AM

If you leave the color in long it'll be darker.I had bleached my hair to try to do highlights but only let it turn medium brown and I tried to do Manic Panic in Midnight Purple and it turned out to look black.I was ok since my hair was mostly black but I wanted to have purple highlights.

I think my hair was healthier when I used permanent hair color to lighten my hair instead of bleach.
