I dye with L'Oreal Preference which is a permanent dye and definitely damaging to hair but I need it to cover my color-resistant grays.
When I dye my hair I use Deva Lo Poo and I do two serious scrubs and rinsing to make sure I get out the color. I wish I didn't have to do such heavy duty scrubbing because it tangles my hair, but I don't want to leave any of that color on my hair or scalp - not healthy.
I just bought Curl Junkie Curl Rehab Moisturizing Hair Treatment (conditioner) and I'm going to try using that after I use the Deva Lo Poo because I've been using it as my daily conditioner and it is the best I've ever used. It can be used as a daily or a deep conditioner depending on how long it is left on.
Sometimes during the week I use the Deva Lo Poo instead of just conditioner washing - depends on whether I've been working out and sweating, etc. I can't say whether the Deva Lo Poo is great or not - it does the job OK and I haven't tried any other lo poo. I think the most important thing is to use a great conditioner.
Another great conditioner is La Coupe Silky Smooth which was rated #1 in the Conditioner Chronicles (here on nc.com) and it is in drugstores but it contains amodimethicone, so I don't use that unless I am planning to lo poo the next time I wash. The Curl Junkie mentioned above seems just as good and doesn't have a cone.
Also, I do a protein treatment during the week before I dye my hair. I've been using Nexxus Emergencee which definitely helps my curls be bouncy, but like most protein treatments it can make hair stiff. So I bought Curl Junkie Repair Me which is a protein treatment that supposedly doesn't make one's hair stiff. I'm trying very hard not to be a pj either (LOL) but my hair has been looking so great since I started using the Curl Junkie products that I bought these two - the conditioner and protein treatment.
It helps a lot to order samples from Kathymack who is on this board. Her samples come quickly, they are all between $2-4 dollars and that way I avoid being a PJ because I can try out a lot of different formulations and not waste a bundle. A lot of us have gone that route - I recommend it. You need pm her. If you want to do that and can't figure out how, go ahead and pm me or post a thread directly to Kathymack on the general board.
I hope that helps!
