Usually for getting a really vibrant bright color like red/magenta you have to lighten your hair first with bleach/lightener to get all the previous pigment out, then as a separate treatment do the coloring. The highest developer is a 40 volume will usually yield the most dramatic lightening effect, but you may want to check with whatever bleach brand you're using to see their recommendations. It really would depend on how much you're willing to put your hair through, what your current level of color is now, and how vibrant/true to color you'd want to get your hair with the new color.
