Naturtint...Has this happened to anyone?

The last time I colored my hair, I used Naturtint. I like the results, although it came out a little darker than I had planned. It's time to color again and I'm afraid to use this product again. Here's why...

I followed all the directions and then proceeded to rinse out. As I stood under the water, my hair started to feel drier and drier. Very straw-like. Really really straw-like. I almost jumped out of the shower to make sure my hair wasn't falling out. So in my state of panic, I opened the conditioner that came with it and slathered it ALL on very quickly. My hair felt immediately better and just about normal again. I DT'd a couple of days later and everything was fine. I did have some breakage the next week, but I think that was from a coconut oil experiment.

The package says that the conditioner finishes the process. Actually its called a conditioner/activator or something like that. So is this normal? Did it just open the cuticle a lot and the final step closed it? Or is there something in the hair color that my hair just really disliked?

Not sure what to do. Nothing I've read about others who have used this suggests that they experienced anything like this. Should I go back to regular drug store color. I'm scared to try henna because I already have color and I've read you have to be really careful or you could end up with bluish or greenish hair. I've read about Robert Craig, but it sounds complicated and I'm not sure about it covering grey.

Any thoughts about any of this?

And as far as grey coverage - my sister and I can attest to the fact that it works (as well as many curlies here)! You can see my pictures in my fotki, and I can tell you there is quite a bit of grey in my crown especially. In fact, you can see it in some of the pictures as they were taken when I needed a touch up.

LMK if you have questions about it, I can help.

I've been using Naturtint exclusively for about 1-1/2 years now and haven't had it make my hair feel that bad -- I usually rinse until I see the water running clear, and then I use either a low-poo or co-wash. After that I put the Nutrideep Multiplier on for a few minutes, and follow with my regular conditioner.

My hair usually feels a little dry if I use low-poo after the color, but once conditioner or the Multiplier hits my hair, it's like seaweed. I just colored the day before yesterday so this is fresh in my mind, lol.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do -- I know it can be nerve-wracking!

Curlilocks - I looked over the RC site and you're right. I doesn't look as difficult as I thought. I think the process of choosing a color online or mixing two together is confusing to me. I've seen you recommend colors for others. What do you think for me? My natural color is dark brown. Very close to black, but not black. The first pic is me before CG and before any color ever. The second is after coloring with Naturtint. My recommendations were ash brown, chocolate brown, coffee brown and dark brown. I don't mind if it comes out dark, as long as it's not a shoe polish looking black.
What do you think?

Wendi - Thanks for your input

I looked at your fotki too, and left some comments. My first thought is that your hair looks like Chocolate Brown. Therefore, I would suggest starting with Coffee Brown, as most colors go darker on curls. You would need to just color the roots only, as the gray grows in. Only refresh the ends as it fades.

I can give you tips on that if you go that route. And I've posted lots of application tips here on the Color board too.

I'm having short-curly-hair envy right now!

Thank you for the recommendation and the compliments! It's funny...because I am growing out my hair because of all the long beautiful hair I've seen on Naturally Curly.com. BTW...I think your hair looks like it has a lot of the same qualities as mine.

I am considering coloring my hair for the first time.
my color is similar to yours,Stacyw. I am nervous about color making it too red or too inky black. I am only about 10-15% grey...just wondering why you wanted to switch from naturtint (and which color you were using?)
I would consider RC too if I knew it was semi-permanent as I am pretty nervoys as a hair-color virgin...

It turned out that it didn't, but I wasn't sure if the breakage I had was due to the dye or the coconut oil. It just didn't feel right. The color I used was 4N (natural chestnut). It did come out pretty black, but I don't think it looked shoe-polishy(I know...not a word) and I think it was okay with my complexion.

I dyed again a few weeks ago with Garnier HerbaShine which is semi-permanent. The color continues to come off on my hair 'towel' and the few greys at the crown are light brown and almost showing grey again. I guess I'll be trying something else.

Maybe next time, I'll actually order the Robert Craig and give it a try. My problem is that I wait and wait until I cant wait anymore and then just run out to the drugstore. Maybe if I order it now, I'll have it when I decide I need it.
