First time colouring hair.

I would like to know the basics of hair maintenance when it comes to dying hair..

I plan to dye it a really light brown with golden blonde highlights from virgin dark brown (almost black) hair..

this will be done professionally as well.

I've never dyed my hair before but would like to know if I do a big change would I need to have a protein and moisture balance or mainly moisturise.. I honestly have no idea how or what to do!!

I'm guessing since you're going from such a dark color to a light one, your stylist will probably be using bleach on you. Since I've never bleached, I can't personally offer you any advice.

However, let me point you to this thread:

Bleaching Hair; How Damaging?

One of the posters there bleaches her hair from black/dark brown to light blonde, and she managed to keep it fairly healthy. Here, I've quoted her advice:

I second that...I've been a healthy blonde for 5 years..

Moisture, Moisture, and more Moisture!!

In short, I eliminated things that could suffocate or block moisture from reaching my hair..heat, silicones, sulfates, mineral oil, and petrolatum.

Also, I treat my hair like it's severely damaged. I use products made for dry, brittle, breaking hair, use non-protein DCs and instant conditioner for leave ins, overnight DC and the majority of my products (PJ..guilty!) are all natural. Moisturize and seal daily, and protect the hair at night.

Curls, Kinky-Curly, and My Honey Child are great lines for all hair types.

Thank you again.
