Okay, I get what you’re saying. Technically, I guess you could use a developer alone, but I wouldn’t recommend it. First, it may not actually work. Developer is essentially peroxide with some additives and buffers. If you put it directly on your hair it probably won’t be enough to lighten it. Even if it did it would be an extremely slow process, and you might not get much lift. In your case it’s not a good idea to just bleach over your colored hair. You have to remove the dye with a color stripper like color oops. Now, I’ve never done that and I don’t want to tell you to do it. You’re best bet it to let a professional handle that.
In terms of manic panic vs. beyond the zone, I prefer manic panic. I like using a cream better, and I’ve gotten pretty good results. Manic panic and other dyes like it are semi permanent colors. That means that it cannot change the color of your hair; it can only stain it. So if your hair is dark, the color won’t show up. Its like trying to use a blue crayon on black paper, it just won’t work. Now, you can get a bit of a tint with certain colors like red, but it won’t be drastic on dark brown hair.
Semi permanent colors bleed a little every time you wash your hair. That’s normal. All the color isn’t going down the drain; it will still be on your hair. It can take up to 8 weeks or so for semi perms to completely wash out. In my case I dyed my hair in December and I still had some purple left in the beginning of February. Once the color fades you just put more in and its back to its original vibrancy.
