Default dying my hair...do i have to use shampoo?

About 6 months ago I got my hair lifted to a very bright color. It's naturally a dark brown. I then put a cherry cola rinse on it. I've tried to keep applying the rinse so I don't walk around with orange hair, but now I want to dye my hair black.

My question is, do I have to use a shampoo to start the process? I'm doing the curly girl method and I can say my hair does get pretty clean using only conditioner. I just don't want to deal with mats and detangling. The black will be permanent.

I think it's important to start with a totally clean slate when you're colouring.

What I do is run conditioner and comb through my hair first, then I put in loads of shampoo, running it through the lengths carefully, without knotting it all up.

When you rinse, it shouldn't be all that bad. Good luck!
