Need help choosing a Robert Craig color

I've decided to take the plunge into home hair coloring, and would like to try out Robert Craig. Right now, my hairstylist has been dying my dark brown hair a brown color that has some red in it, and I really like it!

Since I'm cool-toned and very fair, however, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to go with a warm red color to balance me out or a cool red color.

My natural brown is pretty dark (my stylist said it's a Level 5 or 6), and so I was thinking of either doing mix of Coffee Brown/Medium Mahogany or Golden Brown/Medium Auburn, since those pairs are suggested on the RC website. Which would be the better choice for someone with cool tones?

Also, when mixing colors, do you aim for a 1/2 and 1/2 mixture? Or, if I'd like more red to show up but still have a brown base, should I do 3/4 red and 1/4 brown?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I wanted to add another pic in case it helps. The pic in my first post is of my current reddish color (sorry for the poor lighting), and this one is from this past fall, when my stylist tried to get me back to my natural brown (after years of having highlights).

Hi Leanne! Have you tried doing the consultation?
Hair Color, Hair Care and The No More Bad Hair Days Kit by Robert Craig Salon Products, Ltd.
It helps determine undertones for colors, and gives suggestions (although sometimes too dark, but it's a start).

I think a mix with the Medium Mahogany is closest to your current red color. But I think you mentioned you didn't like the mahogany on your hair before. ?

As far as mixtures, that's where strand testing helps. Start with a 1/2 and 1/2 mixture, test a good strand, and see how you like it. Adjust to add more red or brown as needed.

LMK what suggestions you get if you do the consultation and I'll try to help you find a color/mix.

Hi CurliLocks,

Thanks so much for posting -- I was hoping you would! I did do the color consultation, but it said that both mahoganies would work and so would the auburns, which got me confused since, in the descriptions of the auburns, it says that they are for those with warmer tones, and I'm definitely cool-toned.

Yes, my hair does seem to be more mahogany right now, and I do like it. When it was just mahogany years ago (with no brown in it), it was a bit overwhelming on me.

I know you had said that you use Golden Chestnut, so do you think that Golden Chestnut or Light Chestnut would work with Med. Mahogany?

I will definitely do the strand test! Does it work to do it with hair that has come out in the shower (if I let it dry), or is it best to do it on your actual head?

Thank you, thank you!!!

Light Chestnut is a neutral, so it may mix better with Med Mahogany. Just watch your timing so it doesn't get too dark.

You can try strand testing on shower hair, but it's harder to see the true color when it's all balled up, unless you can straighten it out some. I just choose a thick enough strand on my head, separate with a clip, and test that way. You can lay plastic wrap under it, or wrap it, to keep it off the rest. Be sure to grab some gray if you have any.

Thank you, thank you, CurliLocks! I think I'm going to place my order now. I'm actually scheduled for a cut and color this Friday, but I might have her just do the cut and see if I can color myself. If not, though, then I will do my own color in about five weeks, once the grays really start growing in!

Thank you for all your help! I really, really appreciate it!!

You're welcome! Keep me posted and LMK if you have any questions during strand testing or coloring.
