Help me get Debra Messing's color-please advise me!

Well, jury's still out on the color. Hated it last night, not the color, but the roots where the gray is is a pretty shade of dark reddish/brown, but the length is darker and it doesn't match! It hasn't though since I started coloring it...Today since i have it fixed, I like it much better than last night, I just don't know what to do about getting it even again. I love the color at the roots; the length gets progressively darker towards the ends and doesn't have much red in it at all. I still need to look at it in the sun. I will post pics as soon as i can.
Any thoughts caramix on what I should do going forward? The girl at Sally's recommended I use semi/demi on the length. She said it's just gonna keep getting darker if I keep putting color on color on color...

Oh dear! I'm sorry to hear this! I think what you're going to have to do going forward when you retouch is ONLY do the roots, because the other will just darken up as it's been doing. That clerk did not give you good advice about doing demi/semi on the ends - that just darkens hair up even more since it deposits color in with what's already there. Even permanent color does not lift other color - it pretty much only lifts virgin hair color. This is why you're liking the roots, but not the rest of the hair. I wish I had better answers but I'm not a pro - only gotten info along the way. Also, it's hard to judge a color the first day or two - it needs to oxidize, and it will fade naturally anyway, being a red shade. See how it looks in a couple of days. But if you absolutely can't stand it being as dark as it is, then shampoo it before 48 hours is up(that's how long it takes color to really set and oxidize in the hair. Sometimes I've colored my hair and wasn't too sure about it immediately afterward, and then 2 days later I was fine with it. Also, color DOES look darker indoors than out in the sun.
Yeah, I was unsure of the clerks advice given the fact she has rainbow colored hair!!! But semi/demi would wash out after several shampoo's right? If I just do the roots only, it'll take forever for the color to even out...if I even want to do this color again. She also mentioned the only other way to even it out is to strip it or lighten it (not sure exactly how she worded it) and start over, but that sounds pretty drastic! I took pics on my phone last night and freaked out bc the bottom half looked MUCH darker than the rest, I mean very evident. My hubs said it may look like that in the pics, but that's not at all what it really looks like, thank goodness! I will take pics with the dig camera sometime this week and post.

Looking forward to seeing the pix that you'll be taking. I know, sometimes a camera does NOT give a true representation of something and that's particularly true depending on the lighting. Best to take your pix in daylight, with relatively even lighting if possible, like by a window if you can.
I know what you mean about the clerks - as I've said, some are way better than others from my experience, but I've only bought conditioners and a couple of odd little items there, not hair color, although I WAS intrigued by the ION until hearing of your experience. Again, looking forward to the pix!
Let me try to post a few pics in various lighting. In some, the color difference isnt too bad; in others its very evident.

Oh dear! Your hair looked warmer and somewhat redder in your signature pix, at least on my monitor anyway. From what I can see, your hair looks a LOT browner and even a bit faded out, like it hadn't been colored. Really sorry to have to say that, but it just looks like on my monitor. VERY little red shows up at all. If this indeed is color-true, I can see why you'd be disappointed in how this turned out. I was expecting something much more saturated, with a lot more red at the top half, etc.
Or maybe it's the lighting or exposure? A couple of the pix look really washed out. I'm not a photographer at all(I leave all of that to my husband)so I can't say exactly any more than that possibility.
I was actually considering switching over to the ION with using that shade(maybe with something mixed in), but if you pix are a true representation, I'm sticking with my Colorsilk mix myself. Again, so sorry!

These pics were taken on my camera phone, which sucks. I don't think they're a true representation of the color. I will try to take pics with my dig camera today. But from these pics, you can see where I go from darker at roots to a block of lighter about mid-length, to dark brown on the bottom 1/3 or so. The part that is bugging me the most now is the middle block of color. I don't know why but it's almost like that part didn't pick up any color....What do you think about doing either semi or demi in that same 4R shade right there in the middle to darken it some (temporarily) so that is not dark, lighter, dark again? I want to do something to it, even if it's temporary. It is not near as evident in real life as it is in pics, but it still bothers me.
And please dont let my experience dissuade you from trying the Ion. I think the issue was completely with my hair and my coloring it at home. The color at the roots on the gray turned out really pretty, i wish it was that color all over. Although like I said above, not sure why the middle of my hair didn't seem to grab the color...Let me know if you have any ideas or solutions and I'll post better pics later. Thanks

Looking forward to your digital camera pix - hopefully they will be better. In your other pix, I could see that the hair varied as you say along the length, but really, no red to be seen really - everything looked very brown.
Encouraging that the color at the roots came out out a pretty color though. Still thinking here, not sure what else to suggest as you say it might be an issue with your hair, other than maybe going back to your colorist to regroup, and tell him/her what's going on and why can't you get the color you want on your hair. Your hair might have so much other stuff in it as far as color experiments that everything is turning muddy - not uncommon. This is where color correction comes in. Now I feel bad that I might have given you bad advice.( Best of luck!
Ok, got some pics finally that are a pretty close representation to the color. These are much better than the cell phone pics. Last one is taken near a window. Tell me what you think

It really doesn't look all that bad at all, just not red, more of a coppery golden brown which is actually quite pretty and natural-looking, at least on my monitor. Does it show up much more red on yours? If you hadn't told all about the difference between the top half of your hair and the bottom half etc. I never would have known. You have nice waves and curls by the way!
