Default If you do highlights, how do you prevent touching up the roots from covering them?

I color my hair at home and I'd like to do highlights (in salon) but I think when I wash out the color it would just tint over the highlights to a large extent.

Has anyone tried getting highlights who colors their roots at home?

It wouldn't be worth it if the highlights get covered over.

Please answer if you have experience with this.

Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.

OMG, I am in the same boat! I use box color to touch up my roots, because I've got lil grays starting to pop up especially in the front. I usually touch up once a month. Months and months ago I got highlights that are now VERY grown out.

When I touched my roots up at home, it DID bleed onto my highlights! You have to be so precise for this not to happen. I think I'm going forward with the (new) highlights, becuz the girl that did it the first time didn't produce the color I asked for. When I need a touch up, I'll continue to do it at home, but be extra careful! I can't afford to go to the salon every month to touch up my roots.

The hair line is what I'm most self conscious about, so maybe I'll keep those roots up, and just do my whole head less often. You can't see the rest of my scalp anyway, REALLY; unless I have it parted somewhere. Good luck, and keep me posted! And I'll do the same.....

Organic, how is it working out for you? I lack the patience to be so careful. In my next life (when I'm rich) I'll have someone do highlights for me

Samanthalous, thanks! That is the answer. I have to think about whether I want to do that, since I'm trying to avoid sulfate shampoo and I think I wouldn't be able to get out vaseline with lo poo, but it's exactly the right technique.
