I've tried dying my hair twice now with permanent dyes.
Previously, I had just done demis, but i was looking to get some lightness to my very dark brown hair.

Both times, without fail, my roots (the virgin hair) took the color beautifully, but my ends seem to not change color. at all.

It takes me nearly an entire process time to apply the dye. Not sure if that is contributing, or what.

Input on the best way to get uniform color?

Condish: Always seem to end up on my tried and true Deva One Condish
DT: Jessicurl DCT
Styling: Some One Condish for leave in, ArcAngel raked in and then scrunched, sealed with Curl Keeper.

Hmmm. I thought the ends took up colour more easily as they were more damaged. (Though when you bleach, the roots lighten more easily.)
It might be build-up interfering with dye uptake. It makes sense that there'd be more of that on your ends. Only thing I can think of.
Did you clarify before dying it?

I didn't trying clarifying beforehand, but I am starting to think that I just have a lot of deposited dye built up in my hair.
I never have the patience to let my hair fully grow out before trying to color again. =\
I've been leaning towards getting it dyed in a salon next time so that i can get the proper color straight off and have them help me fig out a low matience upkeep plan.

I am not a colorist - so I am just passing along what I have been told. Color won't remove color - so if you want to go lighter over previously colored hair you will have to use a lightening agent (bleach etc.) Also, hair color does process more quickly at the roots due to the heat from your scalp. Or so I've been told.
