washing hair before dying?

Do you wash your hair to get out all of the gunk before you dye your hair? If so, do you do it the day of, the day before, two days before, etc.?
If not, do you find any problems with dying your hair with gunk in it?
What are the pros and cons of dying (1.) with freshly washed, (2.) with clean but not freshly washed (wash day or two before and just not add product, so that only sebum and environmental elements are in hair), (3.) or with producty hair?

I usually wash my hair the day before and make sure I don't add any product. I am okay with some scalp sebum as it might minimize the drying effects. If I can go an extra day after washing my hair, I will...However, due to work and timing issues, that's not always possible.

What's been your experiences?

Of course I read this post as washing hair before dying as in kick the bucket! I thought, now there's a new one on me - that's about as OCD as anyone can get!

I never wash my hair first, but I only dye the grey roots as they come in. If you are using a permanent dye, supposedly you need only wash your hair if it has an awful lot of gunk in it. Otherwise, it's not necessary. Or so I've read. :salut:

The pros and cons of washing your hair before kicking the bucket...haha, I love it! It will look good during the viewing, I guess. However, the mortician might want it to be gunky in order to style it a certain way.

I like to wash my hair 24-48 hours before I dye it. I don't add any products to it, and I've always gotten the best results that way. The color seems to take better without any buildup. I never wash less than 24 hours before because I don't want my scalp to burn. However, if I'm bleaching, I won't do it any sooner than 5 days after a wash because I don't want my scalp to be irritated at all. The chemicals in lighteners are pretty strong, so I want to give my scalp time to heal after being agitated by the scrubbing and the shampoo.

The strong alkaline agents/ bleach in all permanent dyes can eat through any residues, most of us here don't use that much in the way of products that build up anyway. Personally I continue to respect my skin health in the run up so do not shampoo, the acid mantle/ skin barrier most definitely does not fully recover in a couple of days.

I do coconut oil soaks to protect my hair from protein loss, aim to use ammonia free, silicone free and sulphate free dye products. My scalp is healthier than it was using a harsher box dye, I used to get SD over my ears whenever I touched up my roots. I do not dye over any styling products simply because it's difficult to section hair and avoid tangling with products in.

Yes, I feel it is necessary to wash hair before dyeing....
