Dying hair after henna?

Hello people,

I have been using brown henna on my hair for a few months now (I would say about 6 times) and the colour has not been sticking to my hair. It does make it more shiny and manageable but that's about it.
I am trying to cover up the red part of my hair, especially now that my roots are growing out. I'm a natural brunette and I just wanted for my hair to go back to a brown neutral colour without being too harsh on my hair and that's why I chose henna. However, I can see that this is not working and the only way to cover the red would be by dying it. It seems that the safest option is to dye it with a semi-permanent hair dye with no ammonia. I've looked on a couple of websites and some say it's ok to do it as long as the henna you used was 100% natural and you wait at least a month before you dye it. Do any of you have experience with using hair dye after henna? I've read that it should be fine but your hair will come out darker than what's on the box.
Thanks in advance for any tips!
You say brown henna - 100% pure henna is only red. Did you dye with Body Art Quality (BAQ) henna? If not, please do not use chemical dye on your hair! If your henna came with a color attached, chances are it may have had some chemical in it. If it's not BAQ henna, chemical dye will react very badly with it. Hence the reason most stylists won't touch henna dyed hair.

DC/PROTEIN: KC Stellar Strands / CNPF
STYLER: CJ Curl Queen
COLOR: henna, amla & indigo

I dyed it with a henna I found on Amazon and the ingredients on the packaging are: Lawsonia Inermis (henna plant), Indiogofera Tinctoria (indigo plant), Pericarpium Juglandis (plant), Juglandis nigra (plant).
It seems like all the ingredients are natural which is weird because I have heard the same thing: that natural henna is only red.

What exactly will happen if I do use chemical dye over my hair? Is it just the colour that will be bit messy or is my hair actually going to be damaged?
Thanks a lot!
Does it say on the package or on the listing that it's Body Art Quality? The ingredients sound fine, but if it's impure henna it can cause problems. What is the name of it? I could look it up if you aren't sure. If it doesn't say anywhere, then I would question it. In that case, I would do a strand test first before dying your whole head.

This is the link for the henna:

I'm not sure of what the brand is. The safest option would be to do a strand test, thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the link. I did some googling (had to translate pages, since this is a french product) and according to someone's blog, it is 100% natural, but not Body Art Quality. I would be weary and definitely do a strand test to be safe!

Agree; non BAQ could have additives, even ones not listed on the box (some use dyes to make the green in henna appear more green for example). I had no problems using hydrogen peroxide over BAQ henna (but you can't use that over indigo). But non BAQ could go pretty badly… if you strand test and decide go ahead with it, you may even want to do a patch test on an under layer of hair first to be sure.
