Henna Side Effect?
I used henna yesterday for about 8 hours after letting the dye release Friday night with lemon juice and now my urine has a tint of green. Has anyone else had this happen? I used Yemen henna from henna for hair

I've read that this happens, but I don't think its harmful. Everytime I do a henna I actually look out for it, but it never happens to me. I use the Yemen henna, too. Great stuff.
Still the fact that it does happen kinda freaks me out. Not so much about the henna but about other dyes and skin products. It really proves that thinks we put on our skin do get absorbed in our bodies.

Not that I've noticed, but I eat some weird foods that are really high in B12 and stuff, so I'm used to funny colors.

Did you take a vitamin? Most vitamins will make your urine greener than normal.

No I dont take any vitamins, did not eat anything different so it must be the henna. I was thinking the same thing about how quickly stuff we eat gets absorbed into our system! The urine color is back to normal now that I have washed the henna out. I am super happy with the color and the condition of my hair. Knowing that the henna is natural and not a chemical product makes me feel good. Just thinking about the chemical dyes and relaxers I have used in the past and knowing that they must have also been absorbed into my system is scary.

Quite a few of the curlies on the 4a board mentioned the same thing whilst using henna, and it is the henna that does it! I've got a feeling someone asked about this on hennaforhair and got the scientific reason for it - but I can't remember what it was.

I just did my second henna application. I leave it on overnight, and this did not happen to me either time. I did read about it in a few places, though. Even if I peed green forever, I wouldn't trade henna for the world! I used Jamila- Pakistan henna. It amazes me that something so natural not only gives non-fading beautiful red shades, but has totally strengthened/thickened the strands, made my hair even healthier...

I've used henna for several years, and I often leave it on my head for 8-10 hours. I've never noticed any urine color changes, but then I wasn't looking for it either. I'm going to have to pay attention to that next time. It wouldn't offput me though. Henna is a stain and our skin does absorb things, so it makes sense that henna does get into the body, just as other things do.
Another Jamila fan here...great dark reds from the Jamila.

Bumping this because Catherine just posted an answer for it on h4h.

Apparently it is harmless like asparagus urine changes.

Henna affecting urine color
Yeah, it happened to me today, that's what lead to the search and I found this thread. I mixed mine with ACV, paprika, and Egyption Body Quality Art henna.

Buying lower-cost pure henna
Wondering if any of you buy your pure (BAQ) henna online from somewhere other than Hennaforhair.com (Includes mehandi.com page)? If so, where? Looking for a cheaper, but safe, alternative!
TIA

you can purchase Jamila Henna for $2.99 from Welcome to RanisWorldFoods.com
it's ridiculous how much some sites charge for the same product; I've tried the "high end" hennas but like Jamila best
and don't forget Ebay

Thanks - I really appreciate this info. Thing with the RanisWorldFoods site is: looks like at least some of their henna products aren't pure. I don't even see ingredients listed (including percentage of lawsone). They're selling "black henna" too (no such thing - that's code for henna adulterated by chemicals like PPD, which can react to future hair processes with volatility, literally melting the hair. I'm not sure I trust ebay either when it comes to henna. I'm sure you're right about some good deals on henna there. It's just too easy for an independent seller to say it's pure henna without it really being pure henna IMO.

I use the Jamilla from HennaSooq and it's excellent. I have used Jamilla from Mehandi.com as well and it's very good henna too, but I got majorly turned off by a few things, one of which is the shipping prices.

I have never had any urine changes when doing henna, and I leave mine on for around 6 hours. I only us body art quality henna, I am wondering if the henna was contaminated, or maybe it was something you ate or drank?
FYI, I buy my henna from Henna Sooq. I have ordered from Mehandi.com as well, but I have fallen in love with the Red Raj from Henna Sooq. They have the best customer service, reasonable shipping, and quality products. I have emailed them with questions many times, and the owner responds within 24 hours! Now that is good customer service.
