New DevaCurl One Condition ingredients

Hey everyone! I know there have been some questions swirling around the Deva One Condition products and some ingredient changes.

We've been unable to pinpoint an exact date, but approximately a year ago, Deva changed the formula in their One Condition products. They wanted to use up their old labels, so the labels on the reformulated product still have the old ingredients listed.

The new ingredient list for DevaCurl One Condition is:

Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Glycol Distearate, Cetyl Esters, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Oleo Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint) Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricia) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum).

Deva is still working to get us ingredients for DevaCare One Condition; we'll post those the minute we get them.

Bottom line: no parabens or silicones in either product.

Thanks for your patience as we sort this out!

does this mean the devacurl and devacare one c sold as of right now in curlmart have the new formula? will the curlmart site reflect that, showing 'no parabens, no cones?'

I wasn't sure whether I should start a thread on this but I e-mailed Shari about the St Up and Above which used to be called Set Me UP. It's been changed it from a pomade to a versatile styler for maximum hold. It spreads more easily when applied to wet hair, just like AnGel.

I did notice that it felt lighter then the sample of SMU that I rec'd. I haven't tried it on Wet hair I've still been using it as a Pomade myself

Also depending on your own nose, the scent has been taken down A LOT at least with the batches of One-C and Set Up that I rec'd. I happened to love the scent so I'm a little disappointed that it's not as strong.......

ETA: as per Shari this can be mixed with Angel or Used on top for extra hold

"Deva is still working to get us ingredients for DevaCare One Condition; we'll post those the minute we get them."

What about the ingredients in no-poo, low-poo, angell, set me up...all of these have either or both cones and parabens.

First they say that they changed their ingredients in Jan '09, now it's sometime last year. If it was sometime last year, why on earth does it take them so long to get back on their ingredients. You think they'd know by now.

Sorry to hear that the new ingredients are in the bottles with the old labels. I was wondering why my scalp itched like crazy. Sadly it is one of the new ingredients in One C...

I just would like to know what is in everything else to see if I'm going to have the same problem. I hope they pull it together soon.
you know, not taking any bets here, but i would not be surprised if none of this actually happened. a 'miscommunication' 'somewhere along the line....'
and so it goes....

Hi everyone!

We chatted again with a very knowledgeable source at Deva and she helped us craft this note, so we know it's got accurate information.

The formulation in DevaCurl One Condition has changed, and is available for sale at CurlMart and at other retailers. The packaging, however, is not yet accurate, though it will be soon. The correct ingredients can be found listed in CurlMart. Deva will begin shipping DevaCurl One Condition with the updated packaging in May.

The formulations of other Deva products are being changed, but these new silicone- and paraben-free formulas formulations have not yet reached consumers. This process will take several months. NaturallyCurly will continue to keep you posted as Deva moves forward in the process of removing silicones and parabens from all its products. Additionally, going forward, Deva will ensure that accurate labels are on all of its products. So when the formula in the bottle changes, the label will also change, at the same time.

We also asked Deva why they kept the old labels on DevaCurl One Condition, despite the formula change. They said:

Deva decided to use existing packaging (labels, bottles & components) to avoid delaying the introduction and availability of the newly formulated silicone- and paraben-free Deva Curl One Condition as well as to avoid packaging waste. Moving forward, Deva has implemented transition procedures to make sure the new packaging coincides with any new silicone and paraben-free formulations.

We apologize for the confusion and are committed to doing a better job in the future. We appreciate your faith in Deva and your patience while we work on bringing exciting new silicone- and paraben-free products to you.

Gretchen, I feel badly that Deva has put you and the other wonderful, supportive people at nc.com in the middle of this debacle. You really do your best to support us curlies. At this point, I feel that saying "a very knowledgeable source at Deva" is an oxymoron!

I would also like to add that even with this "new" info, we really haven't learned anything. The Deva source does not address definitively when the One Condition formula change took place and further, how is a customer to know which formula they have if they purchased One Condition during this very murky transition phase.
yes why does this deva act so mysterious. why does not the founder just speak out. she must be ashamed, must have taken the low road to quick products and money making. she releases a book, gathers fame, but does not relate firsthand to the people, as if she has a heavy conscious that she is afraid to show. i think deva products are great. other than their old a-cone. but i wouldn't buy a product that is said to have a set of ingredients that isn't said on the bottle itself. i read on jillipoo's blog, that the curl junkie founder speaks out on her products, and i think miss massey has done the industry incredible relief, with her book and innovative styling and techniques. so no one is aboslutely complete everywhere, she did hers, others did theirs, she is still wonderful.
I must admit I was waiting for some type of response from Deva b/c I like their products and didn't want to change. It took me a long time to find something that works on my hair but I couldn't keep using a product if I didn't know what was in it. I wish they were allowed to post directly to a thread. I am glad to learn - thanks Gretchen! - that all the other Deva products are properly labeled and that we now know the new ingredients in One Condition but disappointed as Misspam points out that we don't have a way to know which One Condition we have. I will keep using Deva 'cuz it works for me and I am vain about my curls! (I hope people will forgive me - I am a good person and work for lots of good causes! I promise.) PS - Am relatively new to the site - lurking a while but just posting today, have not read CG but do know about the No Poo movement. PPS - How do you ad your hair type etc to the bottom of your posts? I am 3b - have only used the products in the Deva trial kit so far...
Am I the only one disturbed by selling a product that contains a different set of ingredients than what the list of ingredients specify???

I really had thought that was illegal, but I guess not...

This has really made me NOT trust Deva and what they put in their products even though I have loved their stuff so far...but if they are trying to save a quick buck by using old lables, I wonder about their ethics, in general. As one poster already mentioned, her scalp itched because of a new ingredient that wasn't listed. I am assuming she wouldn't have bought the product had she known. That just makes me feel that Deva is not concerned with the safety and comfort of their clients.

Seriously, I am sure that the idea for a new formula didn't change overnight, so why weren't they prepared for this? More than that, why all the shadiness??
Desert,

HAHA!!! If you only knew the firestorm this new information has started. No hun, you are not the only person who has concerns about this whole labeling business. If you look at the thread about the Deva Challenge, there are 13 pages (at last count) about this very subject. Jillipoo has actually had some communication with Lorraine Massey in regards to this matter. From what I can gather, the response she received was 'less than professional'...chatspeak, cheeky answers, and not much substance. Jilli was pleased that she got a response, but it gave little to no specific answers to the many concerns that have been raised here.

Read the thread and you will feel better that you are not the only person who has raised the same question!

They may wish they found that drug after this mess! It has cause major questions about the integrity of their line of products and the company in general.

While I thing this whole discussion started out innocently enough, it has opened up the proverbial can of worms!!

Although I wish there were a drug that would make me follow along more often without questioning (as do my boyfriend & coworkers) because it would make my life ALOT easier, I tend to be a reader & (over)analyzer. I don't see this as a "whole can of worms" - I see it as a "mislabeled bottle of product".

I tell the teens I work with to admit they made a mistake and then correct it. I think Deva admitted that the new One Condition was mislabeled, shared the new ingredients, and now promised to properly label all future changes in products/formulas.

Did they make a stupid (dangerous for people with allergies!) mistake/decision - yes! Are they the most evil company on the planet? I like to think not b/c I like their message about curl & self love and if they are bad I have to stop using their products.

Okay - so I will stop being all "kumbaya/peace & love" now and go read the thread about which towels to use b/c now I'm reading that regular towels are bad and I don't have any old t-shirts to use! I need to stop reading all these threads... but I do love having found this whole community of people who love & value their curls.

If you are comfortable with the way they do business, it's your choice whether or not you buy their products. Since this is one more example of how they do business, many people won't.

BTW, I've been told by a few people in the business that it's not legal to use the old labels.

it would be sooo very interesting to analyze a bottle of one condition from curlmart that deva claims has the new formula.
a fantasy, of course.
just saying i'm not sure i believe what they say. and the truth is, we'll never know.
