Default How do you keep from eating sugar at night after dinner?

I've been Paleo/Primal now for a little over two months....it's basically low carb with no grains and very very little sugar. Meat and veggies with a piece of fruit here and there but generally not rec'd while trying to lose weight. At night, though, I want to just eat tons of chocolate and ice cream. It's crazy because I do fine the rest of the day....I have the willpower to not touch anything all day and then right after dinner the cravings hit. They seem so strong too like PMS cravings although I'm not due for that for awhile. I don't know what gives. Any suggestions? Artifical sweeteners aren't really an option either btw. Thanks!

I normally drink water or tea to help me fight off a craving. I also try not to think about food at that time, as hard as that can be at times.

Brushing my teeth helps or finding something to do besides watching t.v. until bedtime.

Although...sometimes you just have to give into the cravings.

That's what I was gonna say.. Just have a little, unless you know that will set you off into a binge or something.

I'm doing paleo (sorta) and it's helping me with cravings actually since I'm not as hungry all the time. I often turn to sweet things for energy when I'm hungry and in a rush, instead of protein which lasts longer and is more satisfying.

My guess (I have done some research in human nutrition, it's part of my job) is that you might not be getting enough calories during the day.
When I don't get enough to eat during the day, I want SUGAR at night. My body says -- go get some CALORIES and sweet/fatty things fit that requirement in a nice, small, palatable package.
If I have an afternoon snack (contains protein), and if I eat enough during the day, I don't have nighttime cravings. Although I do usually have a planned snack in the evening.

The body knows when it needs energy. And you do NEED around 300 grams of carbohydrates per day for your brain to work well. If you're not meeting those needs, you'll crave carbohydrate foods because those become energy for the brain most rapidly.

I found this website about particular cravings. I never tried anything on it but sounds interesting and it gives some options.

Are you allowed milk? I find a hot milk in the evening curbs cravings and helps me sleep. To change things up I sometimes add cinnamon and honey or Milo(though apparently ours is different to yours??)

My other suggestion is finding a flavored green tea or herbal tea, I have a sweet one for when I have cravings for sweets.

And like everyone said I too let myself cave every now and then dark chocolate is a weakness!

I feel your pain! You say artificial sweeteners are not an option, but maybe you can adapt this somehow... I've found that a container of 0% fat greek yogurt (the real stuff - seems everyone is producing "greek" yogurt now but it's not the real deal) mixed with sweetener and some low glycemic fruit (blueberries are good now in my area) is HUGELY satisfying. It's so rich it tastes like full-fat sour cream, but it's low(er) carb, calorie, and of course no fat.

I'm one who not only has sugar cravings, but also this bizarre, unrelenting craving to just eat-eat-eat until I'm over-full. No matter if I've already eaten and am full. Am slowly winning the battle over that, except for right before bed.
