How can you low carb it AND count calories?

My question is this…is it realistic to eat Low carb/low sugar AND count calories? Or is it better to pick just one and stick strictly to that?
I don’t want to do a low fat diet…I’m always hungry which makes me always grumpy…plus I don’t want all of the artificial sweeteners that come with low fat foods….I typically eat low carb/sugar and I’ve really been working on getting more protein…but everything seems to be higher in calories this way.

I am working on trimming up (building muscle) and maybe dropping 10 lbs….
(and yes, I realize that I should cut processed foods as much as possible....but with my schedule right now it's not always an option)

Everyone keeps telling me to count calories…but I still want to keep it low carb/sugar…..is that possible? What would I be eating if I did?

The more I type this post the more convoluted it seems…ugh. I hope this makes sense to someone out there!!

Actually a lot of people who follow a low-carb diet also count calories. Although, I think counting calories is over-the-top and completely unnecessary when you can easily stay under your daily calorie allowance by estimating portion sizes based on the size of your fist (equals roughly 1 cup) and reading nutrition labels.

I've used the My Plate website to get an idea of the types of foods and how much of each food group I should be eating everyday to maintain my health and current weight.

As far as low-fat is concerned, I would stick to consuming low-fat dairy products only, because they're typically fortified with the same amount of nutrients as full-fat dairy. Other low-fat products (like meal replacements and junk food) contain less fat but usually have just as many calories and more sugar to make up for it.

You can also eat processed foods and still be healthy as long as you still strive to get all your essential nutrients from a variety of food sources besides processed foods. Reading nutrition labels is really what makes sorting the good stuff from the bad stuff easy. HTH
I just want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.
I've been counting calories for most of the summer and been really frustrated (I tried Weight Watchers, sparkpeople, and myfitnessplan). 2 weeks ago I started following the Precision Nutrition plan (it's not really a plan, I just don't know what to call it). A couple of super fit people (separately) recommended this plan so I thought I'd give it a try. The premise is, eat more protein, replace most carbs with vegetables, eat less bad fat/more good fat. Common sense stuff.

The author has a cookbook called "Gourmet Nutrition" that I've been using for meal ideas. Everything I've made has been delicious. I haven't been hungry, and I've felt great for the past 2 weeks--strong, healthy, leaner.

I followed his advice on using protein powder in smoothies to up protein, taking a multivitamin, and omega3 oil. I absolutely have felt an improvement in my mood and energy levels, so I have no fears about recommending this plan to anyone! I haven't been counting calories on this plan, but I'm slowly losing weight. I only want to lose about 5 pounds, so I'm focusing on making sure I'm not hungry, and am feeling good and enjoying my food (all of which was troublesome when counting calories).

So, I hope all that is "food" for thought!

Solidgold: did you invest in the entire program? ($150)? That seems like a lot of money...but the way you describe the eating is exactly what I'm doing now...except I only maintain, not lose...hence the question about counting calories too...need something to get the ball rolling.

I'm interested in this...just don't know if buying the entire schpeel is necessary???

If you do a "strict" low carb diet, you should be able to lose weight without counting calories. For the most part, low fat products have more carbs then full fat products. You always need to check. If they are the same, I go with the lower fat product.

I don't think it's necessary to count calories, but keep a rough idea of a what a portion size is in your head. The Precision diet mentioned above seems sort of similar to eating Paleo or Primal, though maybe not as strict. I've eaten primally and while I absolutely loved it and had a huge amount of energy, it was just too expensive if you tried to experiment with replacing grains. It was just easier to not even worry about eating any sort of grains.

A really good website about eating primally is www.marksdailyapple.com I actually found out about this type of diet/lifestyle from someone on here. It's definitely interesting.

His free website (precisionnutrition.com) has lots of good articles and information. Try searching there to get beyond your plateau!

Try myfitnessplan.com for counting calories. It's very intuitive and easy to use. I liked its interface much better than WW or sparkpeople.

I got the multi, the omega 3, the greens +, and the protein powder from my local Vitamin Shoppe. Be warned--the vegan protein powder does not taste nearly as good as the protein powder made with whey.

I couldn't find the multi or the greens locally, so I've ordered them online.
the fish oil...disgusting.

I couldn't find the vegan powder either....(can't remember which was vegan now...) ended up getting the only one that Vitamin Shoppe had...the muscle milk light. It's not bad at all.

I have a hard time getting the multi down in the morning! I need to take it with juice or some liquid with a taste to cover up the vitamin. Urgh.

I think that with a low-carb diet you are supposed to eat more non-starchy vegetables to fill you up, which have fewer calories than carbs. So the end result is that you decrease your caloric intake and you are satiated.
