I've been a regular walker for 10-15 years, off and on. Some years I got lazy and didn't do much, other years I would be walking up to 100 miles a month, especially a few years ago when I was training for a marathon (I walked/jogged the marathon, didn't run).
I try to work out 5 times a week, between 20 minutes and 2 hours depending on what I'm doing that day. I mix walking with intervals, resistance bands, some core exercises, running stairs once in awhile, etc. Nothing hard core, mostly low impact.
I think it's a healthy way of working out and it makes me feel good.
ditto what claudine said - it's a nice quiet solitary way to exercise and enjoy nature and the world around us at the same time.
But for a social person it's also easy to do with other people. My sister loves to walk with her friends. So walking really seems to work for any type of person, with any kind of lifestyle.
