I do a lot of cardio, with some strength training (trying to work my way up to heavier weights!), but I'm wondering if I should change up my routine and add more strength training so I don't plateau. I honestly don't know anything about how that works?
I just finished a boot camp thingy a couple weeks ago, workouts were 6 days a week. They alternated cardio days (MWF) and strength days (TT), and then Saturdays were kind of wild cards.
On top of all that craziness, the workouts themselves changed every day. We literally never did the same exercise twice -- except on the last Friday they had us repeat several cardio things we'd done the first week.
They said it was all intentional, in order to avoid plateauing. They used the phrase "muscle confusion" a lot, which made me and my friend giggle.
They advised us to continue switching things up once boot camp was over. More muscle confusion. They said if you do yoga, try adding a spin class. Mix it up all the time.
What can I say? It worked. I gained a lot of strength and endurance in those two weeks. Now the trick is to keep it going.
I need to find a way to mix things up again. I’ve been really good about doing yoga an average of 4 days a week, but haven’t been doing anything else. I’m plateauing. I haven’t lost strength or stamina, but I’m not gaining any either.
I love spin!! I used to HATE any type of cardio, but after doing regular spin classes for a few months, I found myself having more endurance (and enjoyment) for other types of cardio. I'd definitely recommend it.
I'm taking your guys' advice and made a schedule to change up my routine!! Today, I used the arm machines at the gym and went running instead of my regular spin class, and I'm going to try to do strength training with my own body tomorrow - stuff like push-ups, etc. and I'm adding in Pilates as well!
