Asthma and Running

I have had asthma since the age of 8 and at 21 I have not outgrown it.
I like to run and that is the easiest way for me to work out. I just wish I didn't have to stop all the time to catch my breath and stop wheezing. I take albuterol 30 minutes prior and it doesn't really do much for me. I was an athlete all through high school and had a few problems here and there but not to this extent.
Any of you curlies have asthma or know of some tips to help maintain your breathing while running?
I finally went to an allergist/asthma doctor (albuterol wasn't cutting it for me), he put me on a daily inhaler and since then it's been fine- I haven't used my rescue inhaler (albuterol) since then, the daily manages it, even with exercise.

I'm curious about this also. I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma a few months ago when I decided I should see a doctor after I turned blue during black belt testing. I was also given an albuterol inhaler an told to use it 20-30 minutes before exercise, but I haven't noticed and significant improvement yet.

I have asthma and exercise is a big trigger for me. I can't run for long periods because I can't catch my breath. I take albuterol, advair and singulair because I also have allergies that trigger my asthma. You probably should see an allergist and/or pulmonologist. I find that the more exercise I do, my ability to breathe improve. However, no matter how great of shape I am in, I have difficulty doing aerobic exercise where I can't pace myself.

You might work with a heart rate monitor, a lot of people go out way too fast, you are perhaps more likely to having an athletic background.

Consider environmental conditions, are you getting worse issues in certain temperatures, humidity/ dew points, pollen counts, on a treadmill that is dusty underneath or inside? Have a pharmacist review your inhaler technique - studies suggest doctors are useless! - or consider a spacer device or a different inhaler.

My asthma is also induced by cold air so during the winter I put a scarf in front of my mouth in order to heat up the air before it hits my lungs. Also, try something other than just running. When I added in swimming, biking, and weight lifting to my routine I had less asthma related issues while I was running. I was actually able to do a sprint triathlon last summer, something I thought I would never be able to do
