How do you get a flat stomach?

Like Tree27Likes

I'm sorry, but I don't believe in low carb diets (not to mention I almost passed out when I tried years ago for a few days). I do cardio, strength training, eat healthy, watch my calories. It seems I always have this stupid belly that just won't go away!!

Any tips on how to get a flat stomach?? I'm at a loss, I've been trying for years. Right now I'm overweight, so I'm not expecting a flat stomach anytime soon. I'd just like to get there someday and I'm not sure how. I do have a lot of food sensitivities and it's hard to manage sometimes. I'm just tired of looking pregnant all the time. When I was in high school my stomach would almost cave in.. how do I get that back??

Have you ever tried taking probiotics? I take them for a couple of stomach issues, and I've discovered they seem to help my stomach stay smaller for some reason.

Yes, I take them everyday, then take a break when I run out and can't afford them. I get VLS #3 which is about the strongest probiotic out there. It has helped me the most, but doesn't fully do the trick for me.

You probably won't like the answer, but low (low, not no!) carb diets are really effective.

But you can't just cut carbs and not adjust elsewhere, or you won't have any energy. (And yes, may even pass out!) You have to eat foods high in fats (GOOD fats- think avocados, nuts, olive oil, eggs, certain cheeses) to replace the energy your body was previously drawing from simple carbs. The right fats are not only good for you, they will also keep you fuller, longer.

You'll want the carbs you do eat to be complex carbs- green vegetables, whole grains- oats/quinoa for example, beans/lentils/peas, etc. Avoid sugars, breads, desserts, and other simple, easy-to-break-down foods. Fruits are alright in lesser quantities; you don't wanna load up on them because of the sugars, but they can have good fiber content. You want to try to avoid a lot of juice, as it's pretty much sugar water. If you're craving juice, it's better to just eat the fruit.

Flat stomachs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. (You probably already knew that!) No matter how much you exercise, you're not gonna get that 'flat' look without the right nutritional foundation.

Thing is, I already eat like that, minus the fact I still have some gluten free bread.

When I did the low carb diet years ago, all my stupid symptoms did go away. I'm not sure about the stomach distention, not sure when that happened - that time in my life was all a blur. Maybe I can cut back slower instead of go full force. I still don't agree with low carb as that would be cutting out some very nutritious foods, plus I have a tendency to have low blood sugar episodes. Low FODMAP diet helps a ton, but that's so hard to stick to, I seem to only be able to go 2 weeks max.

(And let's face it, you just have to cheat sometimes! I've cut back on soda drastically, but I still have one a few times a week, and just last night I was loading up on the peach pie. Every once in a while doesn't kill you.)

I was thinking more fruits that have vitamin C and all that good stuff that we need. I love my fruits and would never give them up! I'm not too keen on grains, they bloat me like nothing else. I'm actually trying out the SCD diet right now, started yesterday afternoon. Hopefully that will help. Low carb diets aren't for everyone, and definitely not for me. I track my food everyday, I've been lower lately than I have been in a while. I can't go under 100g or I'm in trouble.

May sound random, but have you tried drinking aloe vera gel/juice drinks? I find having some every day has really helped me. I'm not trying to lose weight, but I have GERD, so bloating can be an issue for me and I've found the Aloe really helps with the whole 'flat stomach' thing.

I think because it's so good at aiding in digestion and, if I remember right, I think it helps speed up your metabolism.

Yes, I did try aloe vera back in the day when my problems first started happening. If I remember correctly, it didn't do much for me. My problem is I can't digest a lot of foods, but then if I take enzymes my reflux acts up something awful. I swear I've tried everything under the sun. It's so frustrating, I just want to find something that works.

Your issues with the low-carb diet may have been due to low sodium. You have to increase your salt intake when doing a low-carb diet and keep your electrolytes in balance. Many people will drink one of two cups of broth a day until their bodies adjust. Low-carbohydrate diets increase the excretion of salt by the kidneys, whereas higher-carb diets make the kidneys retain sodium.

Most of my weight goes straight to my midsection. The only thing that fixed that was a low-carb diet. I've lost about 80 lbs now, and my belly, while not perfect, pretty much deflated doing low-carb lol. A good book to read on the subject is Wheat Belly.

You may already know all this, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Trust me, I have no problem with getting enough salt. I have hypoglycemia.

Sixel, if I knew I would definitely share it with you. The times that my stomach was close to flat I worked out a ton, did lots of weight training. Sigh.

I do a low carb diet. It's the only way I could loose weight. There's a lot of diabetes in my family and I want to keep my blood sugar under 100. Started doing it almost 20 years ago. Lost 25-30 pounds when I was really strict (under 30 grams) and have kept off 20-25 pounds of it depending.

Last year, I had two major abdominal surgeries. The second one left the area above my abdomen quite distended. My gynecologist (she's the one who explains everything to me) said it was from all the manipulation of tissue. There was a good chance it wouldn't go away. It was there despite being 7 pounds thinner then I started.

My usual was walking 2-3 miles on a treadmill most days. I started doing Pilates 12/30--reformer and tower with a lot of ab work. Started slow with 2 classes a week and now do 6 or 7. Still, mostly reformer and tower. My abs are getting really sculpted. I can see the indentations under my rib cage and below my hips. The distended area is much smaller.

The Pilates really helps with lengthening, strengthening and flexibility. I never did classes prior to this, but I'm really enjoying it. I'm lucky that I have a great studio close to me that offers the program more reasonably then some.

I had great results eating paleo but it is soooo hard to adhere to. I try to eat as many vegetables as I can but last night I had some over ripe bananas and made banana bread....
Oh and you can get plenty of carbs and fiber from whole foods fruits and vegetables.
So 3 days on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and I've lost about 2 lbs already! I think this diet is exactly what I need. My bloating has been way down. I've dealt with this for 7 years now, trying everything under the sun. I think this is the way to go.

I am now getting my carbs from fruit and veggies. And getting much more protein than I used to. I miss my bread on my turkey burger, but that's ok. I haven't felt this great in a long time! No more grains for me for a while.
