Default aerobics or strength training?

I just joined a health club....woo hoo!!! If my main goal is weight loss (My goal is to lose about 20 pounds---over a period of time) should I focus more on aerobics or strength training. Ideally yes I would do both....but which one should i be focusing more on?

TIA

Definitely aerobics...then when you lose the weight you want, you can do more weights. But in my experience, aerobics is the fastest way.

I think starting with the aerobics is good, but don't underestimate the value of strength training. It makes you look a lot better, regardless of your weight! Tight abs will give you a smaller waist. Strong glutes will give you a higher butt. You'll just get more "shape" to your shape.

A basic circuit routine can be done in 20 minutes and you only need it twice a week to see results (although 3 times is better). You don't say if you are taking classes, but there are lots of classes that combine both strength and cardio, which is handy. Whatever you do, mix it up. Do something different now and then, and switch your routine around every few weeks. You don't want to get bored, stagnated, or injured!

Congratulations on your membership. I hope you get a lot out of it. (Don't expect miracles right off. I have a personal, unproven theory that it takes at least 6 weeks to develop a good rhythm, which includes the desire to want to go to the gym. After that, it's easier to stay motivated because you'll really start seeing results. )

The Denise Austin Sizzler workout I do at home combines strength training with aerobics. For me, the aerobics alone toned me all over. My butt and legs got tighter. But once I reached my goal weight, I really started concentrating on the weights. I'm the type of person, who, once I start losing weight, I can't stop. I'm only 5'4"....I was weighing 134 lbs.....now I'm down to about 115. So, I have to do weights so I don't look too "bony".

How did you lose the weight? I'm really interested in what you have to say, as I'm 5'3, 134lbs and would like to get down to 115.
And are you pearshaped?

Thanks.

No, I wouldn't say I'm pear-shaped. Actually, I had always weighed around 115 before I went on the Zoloft. Then I gained the weight and went up to 134. When I got off the medicine, I started doing aerobics every day and watched what I ate....no sugar most of the time....but you can't completely cut it out, right? The weight came off very easily for me....but I think it's because the Zoloft was out of my system.
But I think if you stay active and exercise almost every day and stay away from the fat and sugar for the most part, it should be just as easy for you too.....keep us posted on your progress!!!

CurlyRed,

Do both if you have the time. The benefits are just compounded! For some incentive, if you have a Target store near you, they have bikini tops and bottoms on clearance starting at $2.24 each.

P.S. For the record, I do cardio and weights, and portion control (no low fat, low sugar anything!).

Thanks for telling me about the Target sale ny_chic! I'l have to check that out. That is a good incentive!! I've been doing both aerobics and strength training for the past 4 days straight. I did aerobics everyday for those 4 days, and strength training on 2 of those days. I've also been trying to eat smaller portions. Well I may not have lost any weight yet, I know that it will take time to come off, but I definately do FEEL a lot better already.

They are both equally important.

I do 3 days of aerobics and 3 days of Strength training (along with pilates and yoga). When I watch my diet(the HARD part for me), I can usually lose about a pound a week doing this combo!

Aerobics will help burn the calories, but it's the weights that will cause INCH loss and change the shape of your body.

Thanks. I came off the contraceptive pill a couple of months ago, and my appetite really increased while I was on that. I didn't realise how much so until I came off it.

I will keep you posted on how I do. Usually I'm terrible at following diets and exercise plans, but I have more incentive now due to being bigger than I've ever been. I think the main problem is my thighs, although the whole area needs to be streamlined. As for my tummy, I think that's a combination of eating badly and needing toning. I'm expecting that to go flat fairly quickly.

My initial goal is to get down to 126lbs - that's my pre-weight gain weight. I also want to get down to 38inch hips again, and very preferably lower, but I can't see that happening. I'll be starting on all this next week.

Both are important and you will lose weight faster with both.

I do the vidoes by the The Firm and I highly recommend them. You can research them onwww.firmdirect.com and then buy them on www.half.com. They are about 30 min to one hour depending on which volume or version you get.

a lot of people are talking about how they did weight training to help lose the last couple pounds and inches, i'm curious what kind of weight training have people done? like what is your routine?

I really like the firm fitness videos. They combine intense weight training with aerobic exercise. Muscles burn more calories and fat when your body is at rest so it's good to work on both weight loss and strength training at the same time. Waiting to strength train until after you loose weight could actually work against you. You wear out faster and don't have as much energy. Plus, you loose more inches so you appear (and are) thinner faster than if you were just watching the scale.

If you're interested in the videos, I ordered mine on line at www.firmdirect.com

I recommend both. 2-3 days of strength training. 3 days of cardio-treadmill, bike, elliptical, aerobic class. Switch it up. Is there a trainer at your gym? Pay for a one time session to teach you the basics and give you a workout (written out). Most gyms provide the first session free. Just ask Also many of the fitness magazines publish workouts that are well rounded--shape, fitness, oxygen. A pro can make sure you are covering all muscle groups.
