Dana's Log

Okay, I'm finally going to start one. I hope this keeps me motivated. I hope to exercise today. We'll see what happens!!!
Monday, July 11

Went to the gym. Did the exercise bike for 15 minutes. It was all I could do because my back hurt SO MUCH. At least I went...

Unfortunately, I've been basically starving myself all day. I found a package of Oreos and ate way too many.

Good start. Sorry to hear about the back... maybe you should start out walking on the treadmill or around your neighborhood?

Are you staying hydrated?
Yeah, drinking lots of water.

Tuesday, July 12

Breakfast consisted of two eggs, a small strawberry yogurt, and a spoonful of peanut butter.

Lunch wasn't too great. I had a large tortilla (LARD CITY) and a small bowl of oatmeal.

I haven't eaten dinner yet. If anyone has any suggestions, thatd be awesome. My mom made fajitas tonight with the lardy tortillas. I'm thinking of having the meat and some fruit.

Exercise wise, I made a big mistake today. I went to the gym and did all my upper back exercises and leg exercises. I haven't done leg exercises in ages so my legs were shaking afterwards. I tried walking for a few minutes but my legs felt like they were going to buckle. So, tomorrow, walk first and THEN do everything else.

I am stalling at the moment but I am going to work on my abs in a little bit.

So... what did you settle on for dinner last night? Did you do abs?
Last night I had half a Subway roast beef sandwich, a few small pieces of chicken, and some grapes. I didn't do abs afterall. My stomach hurt the rest of the night because I didn't eat enough. Now, I actually did eat enough, but I think I felt that way because I'm so used to eating a lot more. I'm getting there though.

Wednesday, July 13

Went to the gym. Spent 15 minutes on the treadmill, got bored, did 15 minutes on the bike and then went back and did 15 more minutes on the treadmill. I think its easier that way. I also did a lot of upper body/back exercises.

Breakfast: two eggs, a small strawberry yogurt, and some grapes

Lunch: bad bad bad. I had one of those huge tortillas again.

Dinner: Haven't had anything yet. I've had a few handfuls of Wheathins today. I think theres some more fajita chicken left....

I'm having major cravings for a huge tortilla with cream cheese. Ahhh!!!! I can't do that!!

UGHHH. I GAVE IN. AND I GAVE IN HARD. I had the tortilla with cream cheese. Then I had another. Then I had half a bowl of ramen. I only had half because I was full. I ALWAYS give in to cravings. I don't know why its so hard.
I've been basically doing the Atkins diet for a few months now, and I almost never crave things anymore, and I never feel hungry. It's amazing to me, because I always used to crave sweets and carbs, and if I tried to diet before, I was always hungry. It might be something you want to look into, if you are having a hard time giving into cravings and hate the hungry feeling.

(I don't know if you know much about the Atkins diet, so I just want to say that it involves eating a lot of salad, veggies, and water, as well as some meat and cheese)

If you're considering Atkins, let me know. I can explain the backlash if you fall off the wagon, and provide some arguments against.

For your first week, I think you're doing great just focusing on drinking more water and getting used to exercising!

The only reason I suggest it is because I had too problems--I had cravings and I hated feeling hungry--and it sounds like you might have the same problems. Eating low carb pretty much completely eliminated these two problems, and I've lost weight and feel good.

low carb and smart fats are great but be careful w/ high fat eat any protein diets. i knew a guy who worked out religiously and was otherwise healthy (never drank in his life) and was 33 following atkins type diet - not eating oatmeal and eating high fat protein. he did lose weight. he also had a heart attack....first they put in a stint then had to do a quadruple bypass....they tested for genetic stuff and nothing came up. he's a friend and i can attest to the fact that it has majorly changed his life. he's now on a cholesterol lowering med, a blood pressure med, a blood thinner and aspirin maybe for the rest of his life. just be careful. his doc told him that clinton did atkins and lost weight but also had heart problems (remember his bypass). heart health is very important...eat oatmeal to lower your cholesterol. the doc told my friend no pork and beef (like a steak) only 3-4 times a year. not trying to scare anyone but unless you know your blood pressure and cholesterol can handle it eat HEART healthy stuff and don't focus on atkins exclusively because who cares if you lose weight if you mess up your heart....it's not worth it!!

this is not directed at any one person i'm just sharing a real life story that happened just this year of someone i know well in case it helps someone here!

Since I recommended to Dana that she put her log here for all your wonderful feedback and encouragement, I feel a certain responsibility in making sure she has all the information she needs for making informed decisions.

When I make recommendations to my friends (very successfully, I might add), or they tell me they are trying something new or if I myself plan to try anything I look into it. I read research studies, online discussions dedicated to that topic, discuss with real life experts I know, etc.

That's all.
Thanks guys. Well, I'm not sure if I want to try an actual diet diet, like Atkins or Weight Watchers (which I have actually done in the past). I'm hoping I can get over this hump and just stop eating so much and eventually work on my portions. Of course, its not working now, but its only been four or so days.

But. I understand that eating a lot of carbs doesn't help. I think my diet consists of mostly carbs. I heard somewhere (maybe here?) that if you eat carbs in the morning you'll crave more food later in the day? Ive been having two eggs, some grapes, and peanut butter for breakfast for the past few days. I'm never very hungry for lunch, but I eat it anyway. I've been eating these huge tortillas for lunch!! I'm assuming those have a bunch of carbs. Nighttime is the worst time for me. I sit in front of the computer all night. All of a sudden, I get a HUGE craving for something specific. I try drinking water or substituting something else, but it never works. The thing is, I'm never really hungry. I just suddenly think "Hey, I want a huge bowl of mac and cheese right now".

I lost a lot of weight when I was 16 by walking for about 45 minutes every night. I didn't even diet. I don't think that'll work for me now that I'm almost 21. I've gained so much weight in the past year!!!!

So, I started off my day, at 2:30, with a bowl of Cinnamon toast crunch and a small strawberry yogurt. The yogurts I talk about are the La Crems, so I'm assuming they're not as healthy as some. My excuse for not exercising right now is: all the family cars are gone and I can't walk because its 150 degrees outside. I suppose I could do back exercises. I don't mind those one bit! My show only runs till 8 tonight so I'm thinking I will walk after the show. I usually have more motivation to walk at night because its nicer (and by nice, I mean 90 or so degrees) and its relaxing. I'll also get a nice workout during the show, thank goodness.

Exercise isnt my problem. Its easy to get started, easy to keep doing. The diet thing is absolutely horrible!!

Edit: Ughh. I was planning on just checking my weight once a week. I was going to wait until Sunday. I decided to check today for some weird reason. I weigh three more pounds than I did Saturday or Sunday. When I weighed myself on Sat or Sun, I was four pounds lighter than I was a month ago. I thought that was a bit weird cuz I hadn't been doing much exercising and definitely hadn't been dieting. So, I'm thinking, either I gained three pounds in the past week (is that even possible?) or the number just happened to be wrong that day. Either way, I'm back at my original weight and I'm angry. I am seeing some old friends from highschool in two and a half weeks. I realize I can't lose 20 pounds in two and a half weeks. I just want there to be some change. I don't know if that will even happen at this rate!!!

The extra weight is probably water.

How much water are you actually drinking daily? You probably want to start the day off with a good 16oz.

I've never heard of carbs in the AM leading to carb cravings.. maybe sugary carbs? Sugar is evil (as much as I love it!) I would have whole grain carbs with a protein to start off your day. Something like oatmeal and eggs. Wholegrain toast and eggs, etc.

As far as exercising is concerned, consistency is important, and so is planning ahead. If you can't get to the gym, and it's too hot to go for a walk, you may need to get a tape for backup. I've heard of one called "Walk away the pounds" that is very popular. You can read reviews at http://www.videofitness.com You might be able to rent it, maybe netflix has it.
Thats a good thought, a tape. I have many exercise dvds I could be using. I just gotta take it slow, I guess. I was busy today with doc appointments and really have no energy to exercise right now. I'm hoping to follow a healthy diet today. If I can do that today, tomorrow will be easier, as will the next day and the next day and so on.

So how did your plan go?
Well, can't remember where I left off. I last exercised Saturday. I didn't eat much that day. I went out to Dennys with my mom after the show and FOR SOME WEIRD REASON I decided to try the t-bone steak. I threw up all night and all morning. Yesterday I only ate a handful of grapes and some saltines. I did very well today. I walked for thirty minutes and did some upper back work. Breakfast was two eggs and some fruit, lunch was some low fat yogurt, and dinner was two tacos. I could probably stand to eat a bit more than that, but I'm still recovering from that stupid steak.

Nasty.

I hate Dennys. Ugh!

Are you drinking the 16oz of water when you wake up and more throughout the day? That will help flush out any toxins from the Dennys episode.

You're into week 2, so it's time to start tightening up on the diet and workouts...

Can you breakdown what you actually do when you say you did back exercises... are you using weights or your body weight?

Which of the no-nos are you cutting out from your diet?
I have definitely been drinking a lot more water. My pee is clear.

Well, I have stopped going to fast food places. The only things I've really been snacking on for the past few days are some Wheathins. I want to try to get rid of those. I've been eating a decent breakfast, small lunch, and whatevers for dinner. Last night it was two tacos, tonight its something my sisters making so most likely I wont eat much, hehe.

Well, I went to a trainor a few weeks ago and she gave me some upper back exercises to do. Some with resistance bands, some with machines. I think one of the machines is called a front row machine or something like that. You keep pulling the handles back until your shoulder blades touch. I also do push ups against the wall and squeeze my shoulder blades together. I haven't done anything with free weights yet. I'm going to start those tonight.

You wouldn't believe the amount of Samplers (four cheese sticks, onion rings, chicken, and a ton of ranch) that I've had at Dennys in the past few months. Ewwww.
