9mi run this am

Wild, all things come in time. I certainly didn't start off running more than 2-3mi a pop.

sdc, what's 30min squeeze?

FTFE I have 2nd, 3rd day hair BUT let me say that my hair is growing out of a twa from my big chop in January SO you may not want to go off of my experience lol My hair is about 6 inches long now when pulled straight

Most curlies from what I've read do pineapples at night to maintain their hair. What is your regime and what is your hair length?

Ha! Well see that's the problem. I'm still working on my regime. My hair is about chin length (curled).
Right now I rinse and condition daily., I cowash or loo poo a couple times a week. I'm weening down to once a week.
What is your process for 2nd and 3rd day hair?

no run for me today, I mowed lawn and did yard work for an hour though. dh and I are remodeling our basement into a home theater and that is taking precedence over run I guess....off kicking rocks and pouting. it's a beautiful night and I'd much rather be running.

FTFE welcome!, I'm bad about 2nd and 3rd day hair. I usually end up with a loose pony (very loose) with a bandana. I spritz with a homemade detangler/leave in (1/3 conditioner to 2/3 water). I need to be better about that, but a lot of the time...my 2nd and 3rd day hair is just too big and in my way chasing after 3 kids and keeping up with my house, so it's easier for it to be back and out of the way
I don't have a sports watch or anything and haven't timed my runs in a while, though 9mi takes me about 1h15min. I'm working on slowing my long runs down a little though, long runs are supposed to be done nice and steady at a slower pace and I just get too used to running a faster pace (on my shorter runs). Sounds like you are getting in some great workouts! Feel free to jump right in, we don't bite

ok, off to the basement...humph

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Mamacurl, Sorry you missed the run. It sucks when life gets in the way of them. You're quite the sprinter. My short stumpy legs don't go that fast (I'm almost 5'2" with a really long torso - like the characters from Southpark only I'm not as round LOL).

Do most of you workout outside or at the gym? Anyone else here workout from home? How often do you guys check in? Once a week with what you did for the whole week or everyday you work out?

Today I jogged/walked (using a modified C25K week 3) for 40 minutes (2.75 miles) and then did Cathe's Med Ball Abs (It's a 10 minute workout)

I only workout inside our house. Our neighborhood is way to hilly for me to jog. The only thing is our treadmill just broke. Darn. So I have to use only the bike until we can get a new treadmill. I am looking into some workout DVD's that combine cardio and strength training, so hopefully I can get those soon.

Curls, Do you know what you plan on getting? or are you still deciding?

If you let me know how long of a workout you want and if you like heavier weights / less reps or lighter weights / more reps for the weight work, and your music preferences I might be able to make some suggestions.

You can also go to www.collagevideo.com to preview workouts. It a great source to research what you want. Sometimes the prices are the same as other sources, sometimes not.....

I am still undecided, but I do like the Cathe Imax ones. Though they seem to be more advanced.
I don't really have a music preference.
I would prefer less reps or lighter weights.
Definitely will check out that link.

Oh Cathe, my favorite. Her music is always motivating and I could do her DVDs for months straight without getting sick of her personality.

Her Imax workouts themselves are pure cardio. Her Imax2 DVD is a two workout DVD. While IMax2 is advanced, Cardio and Weights is Int/Adv. Do you have a workout step? Have you done step workouts before? Both of the workouts in Imax2 use one. Her DVDs also have premixes that allow you to shorten (or lengthen workouts).

No I don't have a step, but if I was to get her DVD's I would get the step. No I haven't done any kind of workout DVD before (except one time I was at a friends house and I did some then) besides jogging, biking, crunches and some curls using 5 pound weights.

FTFE, I check in almost daily just to keep up . I workout 5 days a week usually, usually 3 run days and 2 zumba days. though I had to miss my fri morning zumba this week and will all month, to take my 6yr old to summer school. I'll have to rework my schedule so that I'll zumba sun and tues instead, though I'd rather do it friday before my long run (saturdays). It's definitely taken me a while to get to the speed I'm at, it feels good where I'm at so I'll stay for a while. May work on speed again next year.
I workout mostly out of home and at the gym

Curls,
If you've never done a step workout, you may want to start with something more like Cathe's Basic Step and Body Fusion. She breaks down the moves more then her other DVDs. I think this is done on the home size step, but I would recommend the club size if you have room for it.

If you want something less intense to start with, Crunch boot camp is a good workout and it doesn't require a step. It's not dancy and a quick 30 minute workout.

Mama,
Wow I don't think I could fit in 5 workouts a week with kids. I imagine I'd be getting up at 4 instead of 5:30 to workout.... Good for you.

Hey FTFE, I wear a satin bonnet at night for now. It keeps my hair in tact. I wake up in the morning and fluff and go. I may spray a conditioner/water mix on my hair if it needs a boost. I try to wash it with shampoo only once a week. I do cowash when I feel it needs it. I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible. What I love about finally being bold enough to rock my curls is the fact that it's so much easier to deal with. When I would wear my hair straight there was no way in hell I would workout as much as I do because I would have to style everyday lol

I usually check in every other day when I run. It keeps me motivated to read what others are doing I work out in the gym but only because it's more safer for me right now. I will return to the outside world soon lol

Mamacurl, 9 miles in 1 hr 15 min WOW girl

completed W6D2 today For some reason I struggled with the first 10 minutes, but I got through it I'm almost done!
Thanks for the tips on 2nd day hair. I might try it tomorrow since I won't be working out. I'll start there first...

Today I was short on time so I just did a 30 minute walk/run, and called it good enough... Off to finish cleaning the house..

long run today 10.61mi, felt good until the last mile or so and I started to drag a little.

ftfe, I always feel like I need to clean my hair well because I workout, and get a sweaty head. I just tried a brown sugar co wash yesterday and LOVED it! just added a tbsp of brown sugar to my conditioner and massaged it into my scalp.

Nice job sticking to your workout tryn, how long is the c25k program? will you look into doing a 5K race afterwards?

sdc, thanks for filling me in on the squeeze, I figured you weren't squeezing for 30min straight but you never know

I just put my hair up in a loose pony or bun, then tie a bandanna loosely around that. My hair is fine but kinda wiry, and so it usually bounces back from this pretty well.

I can't wash my hair every time I exercise, or it would literally never be dry. It takes hours and hours to dry, so I only wash it once a week. Luckily, my scalp and hairline don't get sweaty, so it seems to be ok.

Mamacurl, that's quite a run! Good for you!

I went back a bit with C25K on Tuesday and did Week 2, Day 1, then W3D1 of the 100 Pushups Challenge. On Wednesday I did ashtanga primary series.

I had intended to keep things rolling, but I was very tired Thursday and Friday nights. Soooo tired. I decided to listen to my body and take a break. Now it's Saturday and I'm rested, so I'll be running or doing yoga later, not sure which at the mo'.
Aww thanks, Mamacurl. As I said before the encouragement is what keeps me going

The ct5k is a 9 week program. I can run about 25 mins without stopping now. I started the program not being able to run 1 minute without walking
SAD I know but I've come a loong way in 6 weeks!

Yes! I would LOVE to find a race here. I think it's better when you have a goal. I'll have to do some research. After I've completed the 9 weeks I'm going to work on my speed. Right now I am uber slow lol
W6D3 was not a good run. I did not complete it
Now that I think about it maybe it was the switch. I ran outside today instead of the treadmill... I don't know
bummer about the bad run tryn, we all have them. just try it again. definitely could have been the run outside, might take some getting used to terrain, weather etc. sounds like you have made huge progress since starting the program!

MamaCurl, 10 miles! woohoo

Tryn, Running outdoors is very different then running on a treadmill. If you get used to one over the other, it takes a bit to transition.

Plus you may have just had a lower energy day. Rest up and if you can go back to the treadmill for you next run.

Wild, Thanks for the reminder. I need to pump out a few push-up. I've been cardio heavy lately and I don't want to lose the strength gains I've recently made. Today is my rest day, I might go for a short walk and do a few push ups.
