Exercise accountability thread

aaa00a, welcome back! I'm sorry to hear about your hard times. Life is hard for a lot of us right now — I'm also having trouble getting work, yet again. I thought things were looking up, but now I'm not so sure.

I agree with mamacurl about swimming and yoga. Yoga is very restorative and can be modified for pretty much any injury. It can safely return mobility to injured areas. Doing yoga therapeutically is also often overlooked from a western medical standpoint.

And the very best part of yoga is that it can be free. If you can track down a book or a DVD, you can do it on your own. Just modify the poses as needed — you might even find a book that has yoga mods for injuries.

I hope you are able to do something for yourself soon. Getting any kind of exercise in, even just going for a short walk, whatever you can manage, will improve your outlook and when you improve that, things begin to change in your life.

Believe me, I know this better than most.

===

My last three days have been …
Thursday: yoga
Friday: about 45 minutes of walking
today: W6D1 C25K

I am really enjoying the running now. It's a pleasure to just keep going and when they tell me to stop, I don't necessarily feel like I need to.

Hi All,
I am finally back at it. I came down with a cold and then I was out of town on business for a week. Today was C25K D1. I did better then I thought I would after 2 weeks off.

aaa, Have you thought about doing Yoga breathing to help you relax. You probably can't do too many of the poses, but the breathing can be a substitute for the stress benefits of active excercise. It's not the same I know, but it might help. Hang in there.

WileE, How's the 1/2 Marathon training going?

Wild, I'm glad to hear you're feeling better and back at it.

Mama, Sorry to hear life's been getting in the way of Zumba and running, but yeah, for getting back sooner then you thought....

Okay, I see everyone else suggested Yoga for aaa. Great Minds and all.

Welcome back FTFE! Great job getting back to it, that's always the hardest part.

Glad you finally got some running and dancing in, Mamacurl.

Did W6D2 today. I was looking forward to it, and then it was … HARD. I find this happens a lot. Similarly, the days when I have a little hesitation about running [or my yoga practice], that's when it feels best once I'm actually doing it.

Odd.
Wild, I hate it when I have "one of those running days". we all have them, sometimes I feel super motivated and excited to run and will get out there and feel like my legs are made of lead. Nice job getting it done though

mc...I'm done! Any idea on what to do next? How do you know what to do? Teach me...
Thanks for the encouragement all!

Wile, might this be for you?

You know, I just realized that the way I worded that post, I made it sound like the hard days happen a lot. They actually don't, they're pretty rare. What happens often is the correlation between feeling pumped about running, and then having it basically suck. Luckily, those days are few and far between.

More common are the days when I kind of have to drag my butt out here and it winds up being fabulous.
ooo, good one Wild...I like the GW28K program, have never heard of it.
Otherwise, I'd say just get in 3-4days of 30min runs and slowly increase your mileage if you'd like. Or just stay where you are comfy for a while, or even look into a 5K in your area for extra motivation I think it really depends on what your goals are, if you are looking to increase mileage and go for longer distance running..then there are all kinds of things you could do. If you are feeling really good at running a good 30min a pop, I say stay with what feels good. You could then work on your speed, if you want to stay with 30min...say (for instance) instead of running 2mi at 30min, shoot for 3mi in 30min. kwim? It all depends on where you want to go with it

sick kid, hopefully I'll get my zumba in tonight. Playing the day by ear.

Today I did Cathe's The Gauntlet. Whew, that was tough (a 70 minute circuit workout). http://www.shopcathe.com/Intensity_S..._DVD_p/525.htm

Wild, Good find. The Gateway to 8K looks good. I'm glad to hear you're doing so well. You've come a long way.

WileE, You too. If you want to try the GT8K I wouldn't worry about the BPM and just do a run/walk at your own pace.
Mama is exactly right. You need to look at your goals and determine what you want to work on. Since your planning on doing a 1/2 marathon, distance is probably your first priority over speed. You'll probably find your speed will automatically increase some as you concentrate on distance. So you can simply keep going steady at your same pace and work on extending 30 minutes to 35 and so on, or you can try the GT8K. As another option you can rotate between running steady for as long as you can once a week and do the GT8K on the other days you run during a week. The options are only as limited as your imagination (Wow how profound for me ). There are also training programs specifically geared toward training for 1/2 marathons. http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

Mama, I hope the kiddo feels better soon (and doesn't pass it on to anyone else in the family)

1hr zumba yesterday

O's feeling better today, thank goodness. Though school/district policy is they have to be fever free for 24hr hrs without motrin. she had a fever at 7 last night, so she's staying home one more day. Poor kid, really wants to go.

Good Morning all,
Today was C25K D2. I was surprised I was able to keep my 5MPH pace for both 8 minute segments (and went 8-1/2 minutes on my second). I plan to start at only 4.5 MPH for my 20 minute jaunt on Friday.

Mama, I'm glad to hear your DD is doing better and that you made it to Zumba. Sorry to hear she's stuck at home one more day. That can be pretty

Thanks for the link w~h...

I have bookmarked all the great sources y'all gave me!

mc...ty...I don't know wtheck happened today, but I felt awesome! And the woman that chatted me up today at the fitness center, which if I do the math correctly is a bit younger than me! ack! lol...told me I had great stamina..wow!

I need to figure out what I want to do next. I did push my speed a bit up, but didn't want to overdo it, ya know?

Thanks, FTFE! Good to see you & keep up the great work

ah buggar. she's got a fever again, so no school for her again tomorrow. she's itching to go back, this fever is just hanging around as is her cough. It's likely a mild case of h1n1 according to the nurse I talked to. so many kids from her class have been out sick.

Wile, awesome comment! Stamina is a wonderful thing to have and so are those really feel good strong runs! Keep us posted on where you decide to go with your runs, do what feels good for you, I say.

FT, nice job on your run do you do all of your runs on the treadmill? or do you have one of those fancy shmancy watches that tell you your speed/distance etc?

sooo longing for a nice long run tomorrow. hoping dh takes over domestic duties for a few hours tomorrow so I can get out of here before I get sick.

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before!

I finally bit the bullet and joined a 10k running clinic at the Running Room. It starts on Monday. I am so worried that I'm going to be the pokiest little runner in the pack and I'll get left behind. I've never run with anyone before. I'm up to 8k running on my own, but I'm having a hard time with motivation as the weather gets crappy and work gets busier. I'm registering for my first 10k race for mid January.

welcome aboard Mad! I've never done a clinic through RR though have thought of it, luckily the track club in my city has group long runs on Saturdays year round so that's nice motivation. There are usually plenty of people running at all different paces. Keep us posted on how you like the clinic.

no workout for me yet, probably run during naptime since dh is busy working on the garage (running 100amp service and cleaning it up out there, it's sort of his man den).
