haha FT, glad I'm not alone.
got in 3mi speed work run today before my 1hr belly dance, run time was 23:52min including 2min of walking to warm up at the beginning. Really hoping to pull off my 5k in 23min. We shall see.

Hi Ladies!

Congratulations to WH and FTFE for reaching the end of the couch to 5k!

I took a week off due to illness (mine, and the kiddies). But I finally got out yesterday and ran 9k. I'm going to try to run 10k next weekend, and then I'll feel more secure about my first 10k race in mid January.

Its cold out there! It was close to freezing yesterday when I ran. I was still in capri leggings and a shirt and pretty comfortable (I run HOT!) but near the end I couldn't feel my arms. Tonight's clinic talk is about dressing for different weather so hopefully I'll learn something.

WilE, sorry you are having hip pains. For me its my left knee. I even bought a new pair of shoes because the guy at the store thought I was pronating. But after 6k or so, it still hurts.

Wild, I hope I didn't scare you off from coming back t get your diploma with the acceptance speech words. I was really just kidding.

I get that hip thing too. I've identified my problem as a mild case of bursitis. I use the pillow between my knees trick a lot. I also have a memory foam mattress topper that really, really helps.

Another thing you can do when you're sitting in bed or watching TV with your legs up is put a pillow under your knees. Does all sorts of nice things for your hips and lower back.

I like pigeon pose for it too, mama. Running actually helps loosen the hips, which is nice. Yoga can be problematic in aggravating the hips sometimes, so be gentle! The problem is it can feel really good while you're doing the stretch, but if you over do it, you'll pay for it later. [Ask me how I know. ]

Today was STS disk 1 (a 50 minute Chest, Bi and Shoulder endurance workout) and the extended 15 minute stretch (ahhhh).

Woosh!!! That was the sound of Mama (aka speedy) passing me by. 23 min 5K here she comes.

Mad, Why thank you. Although I cheated with the program. I started in week 5 since I didn't start from the couch. I've just always hated running, but I wanted to give it a fair shake. C25K sounded like a good start. Way to go on the 9K and I'm glad you and the family are feeling better. Did the clinic help any (and give you ideas on how to empty your wallet )

Wild, Yeah! We can graduate together this week. I'm going to research some spring 5K runs and consider doing one. Do you have plans on how you will continue after the program yet?

After this week I plan on running just 2 days a week and doing a step aerobics or equiv on day 3 and sometimes day 4. I have found I've always had at least one off day during this program, typically the middle one, so either I need more rest between running, or I have trouble with mental focus running 3 days a week. Anyone see an issue with just running twice a week, since I'm not really in full training mode or anything? I honestly think I might improve better with just 2 days a week based on my experience so far. Am I crazy? I imagine I'll need to go back to 3 days about a month prior to attempting a 5K race.
Any input from you seasoned runners?

50min on the stationary, booooring. We're getting some snow here in MN, and they're calling it a blizzard. We had about 2-3in of snow by 5pm tonight and they apparently had to close kid care at the gym, so no zumba for me this week. Man I really look forward to that. Ah well, did get some good reading in on the bike though. Have a feeling I'll be reporting shoveling snow as a workout this week, runs should be interesting.

Chicki, do you get different shoes for the winter? The shoes I have now, Saucony Hurricanes' have a lot of mesh, and I worry about snow seeping into the mesh parts. Would it make a difference to have something with more "coverage" do you think?

FT, I don't see anything wrong with running 2 days a week and doing cross training activities 2-3days a week, so long as you aren't in training for anything. I'd really make those 2 run days a week count, really focusing on your form and building your endurance during those 2 runs. From there, you can add a day when it starts to feel better. OR you can change around your schedule, if possible. What does your weekly breakdown of workouts look like right now? What do you have going on usually the day before that 3rd run day?

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. I have the day off.
I got about an hour of snow shoveling in yesterday. Luckily the easterly winds off the lake warmed things up. About 10 miles west of us are the blizzard warnings. We'll only get about 6 to 8 inches of snow total here instead of up to 18".... Hopefully.

Today was W9D2. I did 33 minutes again. Monday I did 2.5 miles in that time. Today I shaved 50 seconds off that distance and did a total of 2.57 miles in 33 minutes. So quicker for me. I'm hoping or 2.65 miles in 33 minutes for Friday.

Mama, Sorry you had to miss Zumba. I've been mixing things up on my between run days. Everything from aerobic/weight circuit work, interval aerobics, plyometic aerobics (big mistake), to just upper body weight work. I'm going to go ahead and try just two days a week starting next week. I really do think it's mostly mental focus.

Off to clear some more snow before the easterly winds shift and the temps drop into the teens. Uggg I wouldn't mind except my DOMs have kicked in from yesterday's Chest, shoulders and bicep workout. Oh well, at least I didn't work my back yesterday.

Have a great Wednesday everyone!!!

I just spent almost two hours shoveling wet heavy snow. Great back and leg workout! I guess I can skip my back and tricep workout tomorrow and go with a rest day instead. Off to soak in a hot bath.

I know I'm going to sound like a Mom here, but any of you shoveling today or tonight, don't forget to bend your knees. While I'm at it any of you running in icy conditions, be careful!

haha FT, thanks for watching out for us. I shoveled twice today, we had probably 2ft of snow in our driveway (with the accumulation and drifting). I shoveled the driveway in the am, took a break and headed out with the kids and shoveled off the 2ft of snow off of the deck and also made snow paths in the backyard for the kids Probably close to 2.5hrs of shoveling. No run for me, dh has been working out in the garage all day and has pool league tonight. I may try to get on the bike again just to get some cardio in. Hoping to get out for a run tomorrow.

A nice long hot bath sounds wonderful FT, enjoy! Keep us posted on how the 2day a week running goes for you.

Hey y'all, I'm back. I haven't reported in because I haven't really done much this week (took it easy because I've got a lot of miles ahead of me in the next 5 months.) I'm officially in training as of today! I have a marathon this spring and I give myself an extra month to train over the winter because the weather is so difficult to deal with. Long runs sometimes have to be postponed and this way I have a time cushion.

BTW- this morning it was -13 degrees outside (-25 with the windchill) and I decided that was definitely too cold ... even for me.

Chicki, wahoo for official training. I think extending your trainign is a smart thing to do, esp living in Colorado where winters are not always the most optimal for running. Burr, bummer it was too cold for a run this am. Cold and windy here, think I'm going to have to suck it up and crank out some miles on the treadmil

Damnit! We're just getting old
Ya just had to go there, FTFE
lol at reliving glory days!
I'm working on stretching more, as well...
Great job on increasing your speed! I'm slowly getting there...eh

Yes, Ms. Speedy was on my mind today while I was tracking my run & the time was kicking my butt! lol

Still doing MWF..working on more incline, more distance in shorter times...I want to be careful not to overdo it

Y'all be sure to keep that snow away from Tejas!
Good Morning All,
No workout for me today. I have off again today so it'll be errand day.

runner, Glad to see you back! Training for a marathon. Wow! good for you!!! How many marathons have you done (I think you've done them before)? Oh and -13, brrrrr, stay warm!!! It was 34 here yesterday and right now it's -4. A 40 degree drop in temp overnight...

Just out of curiousity, how long have you seasoned runners been running? Did you run back when you were younger too? I personally waited till after I was 40 to give it a shot. WileE, Wild, are you first time runners too?

Mama, If we would have had two feet of snow I would have waited for DH to get home and use the snow blower. No way I could shovel our approx 1400 sq foot drive way with that much snow. We probably should get a smaller blower that someone (me) who's just under 5'2" with short limbs can handle without having her arms way out and above her shoulders LOL. They build those damn things for men who are about 5'10 or taller with broad shoulders. Is the DH working on any particular project in the garage? Anything fun? Good luck with getting a run in today. I hope it not too cold out your way.

WileE, Oh no, did I mention we were old? No, No, No, I meant we're simply experienced. Getting better like a fine wine. I find speed to be harder to work on then distance. Do you find that to be true too? I'm trying to balance between working on both. Some days working on speed, others on distance. Do you run outside or on the treadmill usually?

Have a great day gals!

haha Wile, I thought of you and your Texas snow, yesterday whilst shoveling us out of our blizzard. Oy! Nice job with the runs and way to be mindful of your speed.

FT, luckily my neighbor came over and helped plow out some of the snow! DH has been working on cleaning out the garage, running 100amp service and insulating it. It's sort of his man den/garage, and he has his beloved pool table out there so is in a hurry to get the garaged done and heated up so he can start shooting on his table.

headed to the gym in a bit, no way I'll be running outside today..too busy and too cold!

5.5mi 50min tempo run (including warm up and cool down both .25mi/5min each) Man my legs are beat! So is the rest of my body from all of that shoveling. I'm thinking my legs aren't used to all of this stationary biking I'm doing. It has been a while. Definitely resting tomorrow

Welcome back rc! I'm in awe at this marathon stuff...awesome

ty mc! I'm trying...hubby's off today, but will be running in a few to get my day going
I don't know how folks do it up north...hubby's old j-o-b was transferred to O-hi-o...I'm like, hell naw! lol

FTFE...great job jumping into this at 40 I ran lots in HS, so it's been at least 20 & I'm back in the game this year..ack! So, it feels like the first time! lol Oh, yes, I see...fine wine...mmm...love me some wine Yep, so true about the speed. I'm getting stuck, I think, maybe on watching my time a bit too much When I got back into running this year, I was mostly running at nite outside. Now, since the weather has changed it's been on a treadmill. I'm trying to stay mindful of what mc said about the difference. I don't want to be too sore come 1/17 when I do my 5k.

Y'all keep on keepin' on!
W9D3!!!!!!!!!
I went for speed on Wednesday so today I focused on distance Wed was 2.57 miles in 33 minutes. Today I wanted to go for 2.75 miles. I wound up at 3.0 miles. It took me 39 minutes, but I did it. Yeah me!!!

Granted I have today off again so I waited till mid morning and had a small breakfast so that may have made a difference. But it felt good to make it to 3 miles on graduation day. Specially since my longest run was 2.57 mile prior to that. Yeah me again!!! LOL

Next week I'll work on speed both days and I'll go back to distance the following week. My goal will be to get to 2.75 miles in 35 minutes or less by the end of next week. I'm looking forward to some step aerobics.

Have a good run Wile. Will it be outside since it'll be a day run? Oh that 5K is really coming up quickly. I bet your getting excited...

Mama Enjoy your rest day. You deserve it!

Off to clean the house.

lol Wile, I'm sure that if my family didn't live here in MN...I'd be little further south...the cold drives me bonkers. Not much I can do to control the weather, so I guess I just have control my bad attitude about it and take it for what it's worth. Good excuse to light lots of candles, wear warm cozy sweaters and drink lots of tea and hot cocoa AND wine

Nice job FT!! Really, you've made some wonderful gains in your running. I bet it feels great! You've got some great goals and are really knocking them out.

holding true to my word, no workout today. was tempted to zumba, but didn't

Saturday did 8.5mi (8run, .5warmup/cooldown) on the treadmill. Man that is near torture for me, need to recondition myself to treadmill running. Thank gawd for audio books, I think I'd go insane without them!
no workout today, rest day.
going to do some speedwork miles and belly dance at the gym tomorrow am. Meeting a buddy to join me at the treadmills

Good Morning all,

I did my 2.75 miles in 35 minutes. That was my goal for the end of the week so come Friday I'll shoot for anything less then that. I'll be happy with just a 15 to 30 second improvement since speed is always tougher for me to improve on.

Mama, Enjoy your bellly dance and meeting up with your treadmill buddy. I'm sure that will make your dreadful treadmill experience much better.

bah, my friend didn't come this am so I did my tm solo. Had fun in belly dance as always, my instructor invited me to partake in a performance coming up in Feb. Not sure, it's the night before my half marathon so I'll have to play it by ear. Did about 50min belly dance and some speedwork on the treadmill, 3.0mi in 23:17min. I'd be thrilled if I could pull it off under 23, or maybe even 22:30

Nice job FT rockin your goal! You are making some really good improvements in speed, your body must be used to the workload now and thus taking to increased speed. Good for you!
