I am the opposite. I go and don;t really care about everyone else. Just remember they are there to workout too. No one is focused on you. They are busy with their own workouts. And most people probably aren't in as good a shape as you anyway. Just go and focus on your own workout. Put on headphones and get into your own little workout world. You'll be fine. I work out with weights in a area with mostly men grunting and sweating and talking about sports. I just tune it out and do my thing. If they don't like it...tough. I pay just as much for my membership as they do. Honestly I don't think they mind. Like I said, they are busy doing their thing and I'm busy doing mine. The only time I get dirty looks is when I wear my Yankees hat and shirt...since I'm living in the Red Sox Nation...LOL Again, I say "tough luck" you don't like it, don't look! LOL

Gyms are all VERY different from eachother as well. I've been to family gyms, grunting men gyms, obsessed-with-cardio-20-year-old-sorority-girl-gyms, pick-up joint gyms, and now I go to an all women's gym.

Sometimes you can't really tell what the atmosphere is like until you've worked out there a few times. So try one out, and if you don't like it, try out another one! And your membership should include an orientation session with a trainer where they go over your goals and show you how to use the machines, and then there should always be available trainers if you have a question about how to use something. If you don't get that vibe, go to another gym!

I also swim 1/2 mile a day. I work at night so i spend my days outside, in all weather. that being said tho, you need to OWN your physical self. this means that your body is for YOU to use to do the things that are fun for you. it is not just to parade around for other people to judge. Once you get into owning your body, it does not matter what kind of workout outfit you have or what people are thinking. as someone said, nobody else gives a crap anyway, they're busy obsessing on their own routines and bodies.
good luck and have FUN
