I prefer to go to the gym to actually "work out" but sometimes I just want a little fun and movement at home, so I've bought some belly dance DVDs. I have a goddess one from that site and it is AWFUL. If you're explaining what to do with the hips, why would you give a close up on the face? I have another bellydance DVD too which gives much better instruction....but never really teaches you to put the moves together. I bought a third one off Amazon and it should be here today or tomorrow. Hopefully this one will be better!

OK, so the one I had at home and the one I just bought are both by Neon, and are part of the "Instant Bellydancer" series. The new one is great. All the shots are of her whole body, the moves are explained well, and she shows you how to put them together. It's hard, though! I hope if I do it often enough I'll be able to get it down. I can do some of the individual moves if I really concentrate, but I definitely can't put them together or add "flourishes".

The exact title is "Instant Belly Dancer 1: A Crash Course in Bellydance". I'd say it's more of a tape to learn how to belly dance than get a good workout, but you definitley are moving a lot!

The other one I have that teaches the moves but doesn't teach you how to put them together or use them is "Instant Belly Dancer: A Crash Course in Bellydance, Vol.1 - Curves "

The titles are really similar, so be careful if you're going to buy them!

Um... I have been belly dancing for a few years now. It may look easy. But, to do it right takes time. And I recommend you find a good qualified teacher. Not some "wannabe" teacher. Those DVDs all suck!

Real belly dancing is hard!

Stripping? Only because so many people have no respect for the culture or take the time to learn it properly. Anyone can butcher the dance. Use the videos if you want but don't pretend you know what you are doing and then try to perform in public because you probably will look like a stripper. That's how it gets a bad reputation. :x

Are we all psychic? I just got a book on bellydance from the library, and I'm thinking of...ok, this is gonna sound stupid but here goes...I love traditional Scottish music - reels, pipes, all that - and I was wondering if there were any particular dances that went with that kind of music, and how I would go about learning them. It just makes me feel like dancing, but I have to stop myself 'cause I don't know the steps.
