Im going to start a hair growth phase again. I'll be getting my hair braided either this weekend or next week.

Once I get braids I usually keep them for about a month. I'll take the braids out just to wash my scalp and then I'll immediately get rebraided. This goes on for about 8 months.

My main regiment with braids is to drink lots and lots of water so my scalp doesn't dry. That keeps dandruff and buildup from occurring and I'll be sure to stay away from scalp moisturizers that have cones or other buildup ingredients.

I've decided to only use coconut oil as my moisturizer and water. I might make a diluted conditioner and apply with a spray bottle but it will mostly be water.

I'll post updates and track my growth.

Dietery side is mostly vegetables and fruits. I eat salads everyday. I will be taking men's vitamins and some biotin pills too.

Currently I jog about 12 miles a day and I'll start adding other sports and fitness exercises into my routine.

Today I found out the benefits of "why is algae used in shampoo and conditioners".

The algae acts as a natural binder and carrier. It's good to first massage in the product containing algae followed by a product containing protein. The algae helps to pull the protein into the hair where it can bind and strengthen it. Most algae products for hair will promote stronger hair and hair retention for noticeably long hair growth.

I only use shampoo once a month to exfoliate my scalp of buildup. I use the Crabtree & Evelyn La Source because it contains algae and does not contain cones. Because it does have sulfate I only use enough to scrub my scalp. On other days throughout the month I don't use shampoo just 2 conditioners for cowashing.

Bought new Products PICS

I bought a large container of the Ampro Protein Styling Gel

I also bought the moisturizing TreSemme Naturals because I inadvertently bought the sleek version. I will use the moisturizing conditioner as my leave in. I feel like my hair has been yearning for more moisture.

I decided to buy more Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I wanted to try the Knot Today but it advertises as a detangler and I don't want anything that's going to smooth out my curls.

However I think I'm gonna try the Goddess Curls LMAO even though it says "for women and girls" ........ now that I think of it.... NO I made a vow to myself to not use any sexist products that say its for females.

I skipped cowashing yesterday but will do it today in a sec.

The gel I bought earlier works differently than how it did when I had very short hair. I have to find a good way to apply it on my longer hair.

If anyone has suggestions please let me know. I do like this gel because it does a great job of clumping and seems like my frizz had banished away. The gel is kinda heavy so the curls are elongated so I might have to use less or learn how to diffuse.

Does anyone have pointers for first time diffusers??

How do you apply gel now & what gel r u using?

I apply gel pretty much as per CG handbook. It might b a slight variation. Apologies if this method is no different to how u do it now.

So, i apply the gel after I've cowashed, RO, LI & blot with shirt to dry excess moisture. I tilt my head to one side & scrunch in the gel and the same on other side. Then I just spread a small bit on top to eliminate frizz. Don't touch til all dry then SOCT.

Seems to work fine for now. I'm transitioning so the ends of my hair are usually very dry ... But it's better using gel w/out cones/alcohol.

However, the difference between my natural & relaxed hair is more evident when I use gel, compared to when I use mousse. I've tried curling with my fingers, rollers, clips - to no avail. So if anyone has tips pls let us know
@Fonki

Currently I use AmPro Styl Gel but today I went to their website and they have some products that are supposed to be formulated for curly hair so I might order some of that gel instead.

I don't know about the CG handbook but I read some of that method with plopping lol with a tshirt to dry faster.

I learned about natural hair care on the Long Hair Forum website where I learned that I'm not suppose to use any ingredients that end in:

-cone
-conol
-sulfate
-hyde
-xane

That's also where I learned about cowash method though most people on there also use vinegar, baking soda, honey, and even beer to wash their long hair to keep it long lol

My new routine is daily or at least 5 times a week:

1. Scrub my scalp with my algae conditioner by Crabtree & Evelyn.

2. Cowash the hair shaft with TRESemmé Naturals SLEEK to soften and detangle (once a month I actually use a comb in this step because I always choose a second conditioner that has coconut oil) and let conditioners sit in hair.

3. Wash my body and then rinse out both of those conditioners.

4. After shower while hair completely soaking wet I use a third conditioner as my leave-in ... TRESemmé Naturals MOISTURE. I love how it keeps my hair moisturized even after 48 hours if I go without cowashing for days because it has Aloe Vera and Avocado.

5. After fully penetrating the hair with the third conditioner I squish in the kinky curly curling custard KCCC but only to the bottom 2 inches of hair tips.

6. Then I use any choice of my favorite gels similar to shingling but I call mine "Puddle and Ribbon Method" because the application allows it to continuously clump up even as I add the gel though out entire head.

7. Then I decide if I'm wearing it down or in a ponytail.

Some of my concerns are if I wear ponytails too often and I also have a huge concern with the way I sleep because I NEVER do anything at night to my hair but go to bed lol.

Because I use 3 conditioners I chose to only deep condition every now and then. I don't want to over condition and weaken the hair but on occasion I switch out the second conditioner for a protein conditioner to rebuild and restore strength. Also, I have only been using protein gels so I try to not use too much protein in conditioner.

Otherwise I have sat under HOOD DRYER for hours with just virgin coconut oil and some of my favorite conditioner with my hair inside a plastic hair cap.

I found the Kinky Curly Custard does a great job of enhancing and promoting my natural curls which are spirals. Other than that I pretend to not focus on my hair saying anything else is just too much thought on simple hair )) LOL

Update and PIC

You can see the condition only method is doing good things for my hair. I think I'll do a deep coconut oil treatment this week under the dryer.

Using the TRESemmé Naturals sleek as my second conditioner for cowash works better.

For styling I use TRESemmé Naturals MOISTURE as my leave-in conditioner.

I then use KCCC before I put in my gel and then I apply another layer of KCCC just to my ends after I put on the gel. Let air dry and DON'T style, squish, scrunch, or stretch out the dry curls until next day.

The only problem I have with ultra conditioner only method is it leaves the hair so soft. Sometimes I want to wear a fro but the hair just doesn't form without putting in products that are not healthy for my hair.

THANKS

I recommend the SLEEK TRESemme Naturals for detangling because it has coconut oil for smoothing. I only detangle with a comb once a month.

Other than that I use the SLEEK TRESemme Naturals to cowash along with an algae conditioner. Then for styling I use MOISTURE TRESemme Naturals and a good amount of it because it has aloe vera and avocado which keeps it moisturized for couple of days.

I dunno if you've found a gel technique that you like, but this is what I've started to do with my growing hair (BC'd last summer, it's to the tops of my shoulders curly now): I grab about half a palmful of gel in one hand, rub it between my two hands, and apply that just to the very ends. Then I smooth the rest of my gel on in sections. I've found that the biggest part for me is not being shy/skimpy with my gel. I use cheap gel (LA Looks, La Bella) for that exact reason. This may or may not work for you, I'm currently dealing with what we call "extreme" weather (it's not even 7:30 and we're alerady at temps of 77 with dews at 73). But..that might help.
Roll Tide!
I was at the 2009 and 2011 BCS National Championship Games

Medium-coarse, super high density, normal porosity, low elasticity.
I'm currently trying out various Curl Junkie and Devacurl products.

I also use LaBella too sometimes. I have found my basic tried and true method but like you said it has to be modified due to outside conditions etc.

I think the last way I applied it is very similar to how you described in that I focused on my ends first but I used the KCCC just for that and then I used my big tub of cheap gel for bulk part of my hair.....but I added a final step of going back and adding more KCCC to the ends again. This is because I'm constantly adding more water and I think it's washing away some of the product.

Overall I like using the conditioner as my leave in especially because I have times when I just say no to gel for weeks. Occasionally I use moose when I'm on a gel strike.

Any thoughts or techniques for moose?

Shopping List

Today I have to get:
1. More Kinky Curly Curling Custard
2. Denman brush from Sally's
3. Large silk scarf to sleep under
4. Rubber things or something so I can stop using rubber bands when I wear ponytails.
5. A NO-cone, NO-protein deep moisturizing conditioner that does NOT have sodium hydroxide.

I wonder though if it's a myth that wearing rubber bands will break the hair. I don't notice any extra breakage and I wear ponytails 5 days out of the week.

I think I should start doing something to my hair at night instead of just falling asleep
