Default Dry hair, really need some tips?

Ok, here we go. For the longest I just kept my hair short (buzz on sides and back, little longer on top), so I never really worried about it. I noticed throughout the years my hair got coarser, wavier, and dryer plus it was already thick. I am caucasian, btw. Anyways, I decided to grow it out and after months and months of using suave professional moisturizing shampoo and the conditioner (both packed with protein, btw), I decided to try something different with my hair to get rid of the dry, brittle, roughness. For the past 3 weeks I have been CO washing every day with Herbal Essences hydra repair, followed by GVP conditioning balm. My hair has improved a bit, but only looks good on say.. the 2nd-3rd day after? I even use a boar bristle brush as well. Not to mention, I use a deep conditioner (GVP and olive oil) each week as well.

What is that makes water make my hair dry? Is it just the fact that it takes away the oils and my hair is too damaged without em? Should I just assume that my hair damaged (I guess from protein overload throughout the years?) and continue my routine until it improves? Thanks.

The problem is that you use a brush. You should never brush really wavy or curly hair because it gets puffy and dry. So you have to stop brushing it and just comb it when the. Conditioner is in your hair and only. I am not sure if the conditioner that you use is silicone free because if it has silicones the build ups don't leave moisture go in to your hair so check the ingredients for words that ends with -xane, -cone or -conol . .curly girl method need patience. I think that your hair will completely change if you follow my tips. I have like the really thick curly hair and it looks really smooth and healthy

I believe I am using some cones, but had the same results when I wasn't using them.

I will try not brush as well.

Also, I just realized I have really hard water. Gonna try to pick up a filter for the shower and see if I get any improvements.

well ok ..when i brush my curls they turn to a huge triangle .so yea this can really help4

There are several possibilities, most of which have already been raised.

Totally agree that the dry brushing thing is ... Well it's kinda like walking through a wind tunnel with the hope of having shiny, healthy curls on the way out.

To the issue of hard water: Thing is, a typical water filter won't filter out magnesium sulfate and calcium carbonate (the usual dry hair culprits). For that you either have to get a water softening system (costs hundreds of $$$ or more), or you need to use an occasional chelating shampoo to get rid of the associated build up from these mineral compounds. ... Guess which one I chose?

As to dryness, yeah, silicones could certainly be locking moisture out of your hair and causing build-up. Often a commercial clarifying shampoo (over one or more wash cycles) will remove it. Then you have to limit or avoid cones unless you intend to do a weekly or bimonthly clarifying shampoo.

Too much protein will cause curls to lose elasticity, and to become stiff, coarse and dry. For some, the hair actually breaks off in places. It's possible you need to limit products with protein.

You might want to try a DC (deep conditioner) once every week or two. GVP is very hydrating, so you could gently work that through your WET hair (never dry) and then place a plastic cap or some suran wrap on it, then wrap your head in a hand towel or reg towel and let it sit for about 15-30 min.s like that. The body heat from your head is what helps the condish deeply penetrate your hair. Rinse it all out. That should help w/your ongoing moisture retention issue.

If you have hard water, that will definitely cause it. I've had the same problem. I like what Korkscrew said. Also if you have coarse hair, usually it does not do well with protein. If you're using cones, you can't just cowash. I cowashed exclusively with hard water for a few weeks, and it just didn't work. Guess how much scum is on my shower curtain? TONS! Get yourself a clarifying shampoo, then try cowashing in between a low poo a couple times a week.
